Music Tech / Sitar and Guitar Tuition

About Me

Dan Hayward is a talented musician trained in a wide range of styles and instruments. He has a degree in Music Technology and Audio Systems from the University of Huddersfield and has experience in both studio and live sound engineering. Whilst in Huddersfield he began his study of the Sitar and has run a number of introductory workshops in South Asian music in primary and secondary schools. Now situated in Birmingham, he is currently training to be a peripatetic Sitar and Guitar teacher. He has worked on a range of youth music projects run by the Symphony Hall Education department, including work with primary, secondary and special needs pupils, and also with children studying outside of formal education.
Dan is experienced in the use and training of a wide range of audio and visual production software and hardware, and is particularly interested in the use of cross platform freeware / open-source software in education, especially when involved with less privileged children who may not have access to expensive software packages:
Audio
Logic Pro, Cubase, Reason, Ableton Live, MAX/MSP,
Reaktor, Traktor DJ studio, Audacity, Reaper
Visual
imovie HD, iStop Motion, Animator DV, Adobe Premiere,
Dan also has an understanding of object oriented (C++), Xhtml and Flash programming
Since the age of 11 Dan has been learning the guitar and always enjoys playing and singing to an audience, having had jobs performing in local restaurants and pubs whilst at school. Over the years he has offered beginner and intermediate lessons on a private basis to students from the age of 6 to 60! He specialises in blues, slide and folk styles on the acoustic guitar, and inspired by artists such as Jack Rose, Crosby Stills and Nash, and John Martin, is currently expanding his knowledge of classical and jazz technique. Not one to shy away from other instruments Dan also uses the mandolin, melodica and percussion in his own music making, and on a number of occasions has stood in on bass guitar for the Birmingham based band Smart Soutane.
Dan began studying Hindustani Classical music on the guitar whilst at university, but soon switched to the Sitar after only a few short lessons. He has since developed his knowledge and understanding of melody and rhythm alongside Tabla player Camilo Tirado with whom he has conducted various workshops; in 2006 to a Huddersfield primary school, over a six week period led by Mohamed Abbas Assani of SAA UK; and in 2007 to GCSE students at a high school in Bedford. This day of workshop demonstrations was designed specifically for the GCSE syllabus, but after seeing its potential, the school asked them to stay and offer the workshop to younger pupils from years 7 and 9 which proved immensely successful.
Experienced in music and arts event management, Dan has successfully organized numerous concerts, showcases, gigs and parties since leaving school. Dan enjoys being involved in a practical way, and is very friendly, polite and helpful in any capacity He has recently volunteered for the prestigious FIERCE! Festival, for CMAT ltd (Grosvenor Studios) and for various other organisations over the years.
