Recording Artist Gunnz “King of Alabamaâ€His name might be new to you, but Gunnz is hardly what you would call a “rookie.†At just 21 years of age, the Birmingham, AL native has amassed the kind of resume that would make any shelved rapper understand why their career is at a standstill. And with his undeterred work ethic, the support of a proven team, and his first single, “Janky,†creating a serious buzz at radio, it's only a matter of time before this phenom becomes a household name.

hile Birmingham still did not have a Hip-Hop scene per se, a young Gunnz, had already developed a passion for the music business. Starting with the Underground Kings’ classic, he studied every album he purchased with the same intensity as most boys study video games. By 11, he put pen to pad for the first time, soon convincing his cousin and younger brother to join him in a group. Within less than five years, Yung N Thuggin went from school talent show favorites to hometown celebs. They became the only group to be featured twice in the Birmingham News in one year and even started opening for national acts like the Ying Yang Twins, laying the foundation for an illustrious career. Unfortunately, by the time Gunnz was 16, he saw his groupmates’ life choices shifting away from his own ambitions. Still, with a clear understanding of his destiny, he forged on. He continued to build upon the buzz he had created with the group, opening for nearly every major artist to come through Birmingham over the next two to three years, including the Cash Money Millionaires, Lil’ Jon & the Eastside Boyz, Lil’ Scrappy, T.I., and Trillville.

The latter performance would prove to be career altering for Gunnz, as it leads to his introduction to Trillvillains, Inc. CEO Don P, who instantly recognized the younger artist’s star quality. But what sealed the deal for Don P wasn’t just Gunnz’ lyrical ability and strong stage presence. It was his determination and his grind. Not only had he stared putting together a collection of completed songs, working with Atlanta-based producer Shawty Red, Gunnz was also earning stripes in the business world.

t 18, Gunnz coordinated booking and artist relations for the Birmingham Heritage Festival, at the organizer’s request, also handling the baby car show and Hip-Hop summit which took place in conjunction with the festival. He was the first rapper to perform during his hometown’s annual City Stages concert series, opening the door for Nelly, Outkast, Ruben Studdard and Snoop Doog, who were the featured urban acts over the course of the next four years. His strong networking skills even allowed him to help facilitate Don P’s business situation with Rap-A-Lot Records. “It didn't take long for me to see that he was a hard worker, a hustler, and a straight shooter,†recalls Don P. “Once I knew that, I knew I had to make him a part of my team.†Gunnz’ business acumen also impressed Tarboy, CEO of TrackBoyz Entertainment, leading to the two indie CEO/producers to enter into a joint venture, knowing that Gunnz will be a key component in their growing empires. “He’s been doing so much in Alabama,†Tarboy explains. “He has a reputation as a hard worker, which makes working with him a great opportunity to expand out of Saint Louis.â€
With not one, but two proven powerhouse movements behind him, Gunnz is doing exactly what his name represents: he’s cocking back and shooting for the stars. He’s currently putting the finishing touches on his debut album, which he says will be an unexpected departure from the typical Southern rap album. If his first single is any indication, the album will be a welcomed surprise. Within less than a week of its release, “Janky†had garnered spins in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and of course his home state of Alabama. “I feel honored by the response we got,†says the artist. “But what’s bigger than that, is knowing how many people support not just the music, but the movement as a whole.†The aim of that movement is to pave the way for other artists out of Birmingham.
