About Me

This won't begin to tell you about me, really, just what I've done, but here it is. I'm a former broadcast journalist (shout out to Philly), a writer, camera operator, editor, video producer and the author of "Silent Storm: Finding Spiritual Shelter During Hepatitis C" with Naomi Judd and Mark Prater. I am also the creator of an anti-crime campaign which has been nationally adopted by the NAACP. Together, my wife, a dedicated, talented actress and I have started a small production company, Joyas Media. Happily married. My kids call me Mr. Cool. They aren't serious. I can tell because they laugh when they say it. Nothing gets by me.

My Interests

Movies. Screenplays. Movie candy. DVDs. Sountracks. Medieval weaponry. Capoiera. Black history. Documentaries. Hiking. I'd love swimming if I could swim better than a rock. Ces't la vie. Graphic novels. Afro-Latino culture. Oh, and movies. Writing and reading and writing, telling the stories of life and love and war and death connecting humanity in the shared experiences of human existence. For real... width="340" height="220" ..

I'd like to meet:

Don Cheadle, Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Robert Rodriguez, John Logan, Paul Haggis, Spike Lee (met his sister), Salma Hayek, David Fincher, Ridley Scott. Alex Haley, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz (God rest their souls), Anthony Hopkins, Niki Caro. Stevie Wonder... Truthfully, anyone with an honest heart with something meaningful to say and a genuine willingness to help wherever help is needed. We have more than enough of their opposites.

Music:

.. width="425" height="350" .. Stevie Wonder, Donnie McClurkin, Kanye West, India Arie, Elgar, Mozart, Bach, John Williams, Oscar Peterson, Cannonball Adderly, etc.

Movies:

The Mission, Gladiator, Blade Runner, The French Connection, Gallipoli, The Professional, Malcolm X, Glory, Big Fish, Seven, LOTR, Whale Rider, The Door in the Floor, Hotel Rwanda, The Godfather, The Color Purple, Cinderella Man, Seabiscuit, Young Frankenstein, Run Lola Run, Silver Bullet, Hidalgo, Rapa Nui, Ran, Hustle and Flow, Collateral, Narc, Sleepers, Road to Perdition, The Red Violin, Amadeus, Yesterday, Together. The list goes on.

Television:

TV is evil. I made some good money from it for awhile. But it's still evil. And fun to watch. And loathsome. And seductive. And probably the greatest medium to ever influence the global perspective. Remember "I'll Fly Away?" You probably don't. Too bad. Great show.

Books:

Len Deighton's "Hope," "Faith," and "Charity." The Shipping News. Wall of Brass. Authors? Robert Daley, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Annie Proulx, CS Lewis.

Heroes:

My wife. My kids. My family.

Virginia Rampage and the Media

Winter, it appears, has not yet lost its grip. If we were to personify the season we would assign it all the brittle aspects of the Reaper, skeletal hands reaching in for a cold harvest. So it is fitt...

Hurts So Good

After a long absence I finally returned to my tae kwon do class. I pay for the class of course, but much like my salary I don't see much of it. That's a shame because I really enjoy it, and here's the...

My visit to the hospital

I don't know what to say. There. That counts as the most inauspicious beginning to any blog I could have written. I would have started with something better, but there's the rub. I don't know wha...

The middle of the night

One morning a couple of weeks ago I woke up to the whimpers of my  aging mutt, Jessie. I've had her since before I had kids. She used to sleep under the crib to protect them. She also used to cha...
