Recording Debut Album... and still touring...

About Me

Rhys Crimmin. Nightowl (Independent) When talk turns to blues music, most people think of Americas Deep South. Now, much further south, we can claim an Australian blues/roots hybrid of our own. Theres no denying the surge in popularity of local foot-stomping, songwriting, one-man-band bluesmen. In the new tradition of Rudd, Grunwald, Butler and others, Rhys Crimmin takes the essence of the traditional sounds and infuses them with a 21st century Downunder twist. Crimmin has written all seven tracks on this CD, recorded in Warrnambool. In addition, he sings and plays 6 & 12 string guitars, resonator, Weissenborn slide, harmonicas, didges, stompbox, shaker, keys and djembe. Not bad for a young fella. This debut recording demonstrates a precocious maturity in songwriting and performing. Crimmin has a natural feel for the blues and its close relatives, with plenty of light and shade in the material. His guitar playing moves from hard driving and swampy, to loose and light. His voice is rich and assured. Hes casual on harmonica (introducing the upbeat opener Got the Blues) and haunting on dual didgeridoos (especially on New Life in prelude to Anthony Kiedis style vocals). He plays some nice slide over boogie rhythms on Zzzs Disease. Stepping from major to minor keys, the pace switches from frenetic to well laid-back. Definitely one to watch. Check out his website.
