About Me

Contact Box Generated from http://www.spacepimp.net/layouts (VIDEO ABOVE:Mandark live at Ether at Glitch Bar. North Fitzroy, Melbourne - September 2007) Noistruct (Boris Otterdam) has been making hardcore and breakcore since 1998, while still playing in Perth extreme noise band "Analogue Seaotter". First experimenting with drum machines and samplers before being introduced to programs like Rebirth, Soundforge and Hammerhead. Noistruct was briefly a two piece extreme noise/industrial act which included Perth speedcore/noise bastard "Peteor" around September/November 2001, but this was only temporary - by the end of 2001, Noistruct was leaning more and more towards digitally produced breakcore/hardcore. He founded Perth Digital Hardcore label 8-Bit Recordings in 2001 with The Last Ninja and Deadcode and was actively involved in Perth's breakcore scene for the next 3 years. Frustrated with scene politics, the lack of interest from audiences, being banned from venues and Perth's draconian sound restrictions, he then relocated to Sydney in June 2003 to become a part of the hardcore/breakcore scene there.Playing inner city pubs and warehouse parties with crews like System Corrupt and Killerwatts. He took over the "Syco Radio Show" and later hosted "Illegal Frequencies" every Saturday night on 2SER-FM. Chasing cheaper rent and a change of scenery, Noistruct moved to Melbourne in September 2004 and can usually be seen playing with crews like Graylands and Black Lotus and running "Illegal Frequencies" live nights around the traps. He can also be heard hosting "Illegal Frequencies radio show" on 3RRR-FM 102.7.Noistruct has released 7 CDs to date on 8-Bit Recordings, NZ web-label God Rekidz and French web-label Chase Records and played at the "Distorted" Festival in Melbourne in 2005. He has also contributed to a few compilations, most recently "Turds Of God" on God Rekidz, "Hey!!! Let's Break" on China's Netwav Records and "Tough Titties" on GPFS. He also had a remix done by Hard-Off which was released as a split 7" with 1bomb1target earlier this year.As well as Noistruct, Boris makes dark ambient music under the name "Mandark" and has also organised punk rock/indie/breakcore/hardcore gigs, published a fanzine, designed posters, wrote and published his own comic books, compiled local music compilations, bootlegged countless local punk shows, managed bands, DJed for rock/alternative nights, reviewed music for uni newspapers/magazines, sung in choirs, modelled in fashion shows, lived with more people than he cares to count, worked in an antique store with a former member of SPK and played in bands such as Analogue Seaotter, KFK, Devastis, Ape Shall Not Kill Ape, Mindless Shit, Spastic Ooze Monkey, Goatma, Nauthiz and Dead X Doll. There are two upcoming albums for 2007. "Never Trust A Rockstar" and "The Last Seaotter" both on 8-Bit Recordings/Illegal Frequencies. I AM NOT AND IN NO WAY AT ALL ASSOCIATED WITH MELBOURNE COLLECTIVE "THE GREY SEA". ALL OF MY TRACKS AND INFORMATION HAS BEEN LEFT UP ON THEIR WEBSITES AND MYSPACE PAGES AGAINST MY WISHES, SINCE I PARTED WITH THEM IN EARLY 2006. If it looked like something was going to happen that they thought I shouldn’t see, they would tell me to look away from the TV and close my eyes…..which I did. They figured this was a good way to allow them from watching movies with me in the room and stop me from seeing anything disturbing. Not that my parents watched a lot of gory films, more like your average action/sci fi films with the odd graphic scene. For example one of the first I remember is the scene where the alien bursts out of Kane’s stomach in “Alien”later in the film they allowed me to see the scene where Ash is killed, because as I remember my Mum saying “it’s just the android”anyway....so while my parents felt content that I was shielded from graphic scenes. I wasn’t shielded from the sound of those scenes. So knowing that it was something so taboo that I wasn’t allowed to see, I tried to figure out what was going on by the sound of it. By wanting to see what was going on and being denied seeing it, I concentrated a lot harder on the sounds coming from the TV while I was turned away from the screen with my hands over my eyes. The effects of this form of parental censorship, was that throughout childhood I became fascinated by any sort of disturbing or unsettling sounds. This childhood fascination, lead to years of chronic nightmares where these kinds of sounds were prevalent, causing insomnia and night terrors. These dreams contain not only surreal and bizarre imagery, but sound as well. As I grew up and was not always under parental control. I watched hours and hours of horror movies. While my friends were fascinated by the gore. I was more interested in the sound and it's use to build suspense, inspire fear and a feeling of almost claustrophobic terror. The memories of what I heard in these dreams along with isolationist ambient noise and soundscapes, drone, textured noise, film scores and keyboard compositions are the influence behind Mandark.Mandark utilizes both live analogue equipment and PC music programs. Tracks are mostly live recorded compositions and rarely edited.Mandark has written a score for one short film, played live at Guerilla Sessions and Club Zho (Perth), Teratology and Ether (Melbourne) and will be playing more live shows soon...Mandark's debut album "Parasomnia" will be released in 2008.
