My Friends
..
I do have a small number of close friends that I love and care for very much. Ok, I know, all of them except one are male, but I don't believe in affirmative action so it doesn't bother me. I believe that friendships allow us to grow, they shape who we are and they become a part of us in one way or another.
From Byron, I understand what it means to matter to someone. From him, I have been challenged everyday to be a better person and an even better friend. In him, I see someone who has had so much disappointment in life but who remains a truly wonderful person, one who brings light, hope, and smiles to everyone whom he encounters. It is here where I get my intelligence, intuitiveness, but also a healthy dose of skepticism.
From Max, someone Ive known for ten years now, I get an understanding of what it means to overcome strong opposition and intolerance. From him, I understand the value of setting goals no matter how absurd or perceptively impossibleand working everyday to achieve those goals in light of numerous hurdles involving prejudice and widespread discrimination.
From Albert, I get my stubborness, paranoia, and self-denial. From him, I also get my distrust for people and the world.
From Brian, I get my small sense of personal understanding along with my refreshed excitement for social science and, of course, John Williams!
From Mike, not only do I get my sense of insecurity and uncertainty, I get my desire to be a kid again, to just sit back and relax and enjoy time with old friends along with good old toilet humor. From Mike, I also get my appreciation for superstitions, and the scary thought that if God does exists, he loves to play games with people.
From Robert, I get my sense of compassion (its there, kind of) and a view that most people are indeed good. If Albert presents a dark picture of life, Robert will always be there with a light to guide one through.
From Natalia, I understand heterosexuality and the mood swings that accompany the XX chromosome.
From Andrew, I get my desire to drink and smoke marijuana :-) No, really, no matter how bad things are going with work or school, he shows me that life must happily go on. He shows me that it's important to have fun and to be kind to everyone I meet. Unfortunately, he's not around that often to help me master this skill, so blame him.

I enjoy television shows with sharp, witty writing. There are no good sitcoms on the air anymore. Today's shows are filled with too many scenes and not-so-funny jokes. The best sitcoms have been the ones with only two or three scenes, where the writers are forced to write good dialogue for well developed characters. Special thanks to director James Burrows and writer David E. Kelley for bringing us some solid television. But, I enjoy the following.
Comedies, Past and Present:
Cheers, Cosby Show, Everyone Loves Raymond, Frasier, Golden Girls, Early Seasons of Grace Under Fire, Growing Pains, Roseanne, Seinfeld, Sex and the City, Still Standing, Two and Half Men, Will and Grace
Dramas, Past and Present:
Boston Legal, Boston Public, Desperate Housewives, L.A. Law, Law and Order: SVU, Murder One, Picket Fences, The Practice, West Wing (I am simply astounded at how much I adore 'West Wing.')
Reality Shows
The Apprentice, Queer Eye (getting boring, really fast), Project Greenlight, Real World
Theatre
12 Angry Men, Annie, Annie Get Your Gun, Brigadoon, Death Trap, Fiddler on the Roof, Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Into the Woods, Les Miserables, Major Barbara, Merrily We Roll Along, The Miser, Noises Off, Phantom of the Opera, Proof
Have just finished Ernest Hemingway's "Farewell to Arms" and am simply in love with the novel. Two beautifully written characters and a simple yet admirable writing prose. I am currently reading "The Harvest Gypsies." Past favorites have been Toni Morrison's "Sula" and "Beloved," "To Kill a Mockingbird," "The Late Shift," "The Making of Superman: The Movie," "The Devil's Candy," and "Star Trek Movie Memories." A couple of summers ago I read four John Grisham novels and thought they were excellent.
