News........................................................ ....................................
29th May
Retrievers,
The NZ tour was wonderful - thank you so very much for your support. Some news...
I'm honoured that a piece I've recently written will be performed by Barbara Morgenstern and her choir at Berlin's Wassermusik Festival , on July 17th, 18th, 19th at the House of World Cultures. A concept that sees composers from different cultures write about the sea or water, it's a timely idea. My piece is called 'Whales, Everywhere!' and will be premiered at Wassermusik. I will be there also, representing all whales who cannot attend, for whatever reason.
The next single from The Awakening is nigh - Rapaki is my tribute to David Mason and Archie Lilly, who died aged 10 & 8 years old in 1883 in Rapaki, Canterbury, New Zealand.
Do keep an eye out at dudleybenson.com , as there will be a shop opening shortly which will include the album. For now though, it's available at Smoke .
I'd like to congratulate and thank Andre Upston of Radio New Zealand for winning 'Best Studio or Outside Broadcast Recording' at the 2008 NZ Radio Awards, for his recording of my 2007 St Matthew-in-the-City performance. Should you like to, you can listen to the full programme at Radio NZ's website .
That's about it for now - I'm going to be in Europe over the coming months, doing exciting things I should hope. Below, a photograph by the marvellous Karen Inderbitzen-Waller . Do take care x

25th February
Retrievers,
I'm very proud indeed to announce the release details of my debut album, The Awakening, and my New Zealand church tour to follow. The details, in a very punctually written sort of way, are below.
The Awakening will be released on Monday 10th March to music retail and The Akaroa Museum. It will be released in a standard and a limited edition of 200, with each disc numbered and packaged with a former library shelf card.
The album artwork, photographed by Unknown:
If you'd like to see a short film on the making of The Awakening, pop over to dudleybenson.com .
To listen to the record's single, Audrey H., use the Myspace player above. The music video, directed by Ed Lust, will be released in the coming weeks.
Kronenbourg Presents DUDLEY BENSON - The Awakening National Church Tour
To celebrate the release of the album, and because I very much enjoy playing my songs, I'm touring churches and cathedrals with my choir, string quartet, and the esteemed Richard Nunns (who I believe should be knighted).
27th March: Dunedin's St Paul's Cathedral
28th March: Christchurch Cathedral
29th March: Akaroa's St Peter's Church
4th April: Wellington's St Mary of the Angels
5th April: Auckland's St Matthew-in-the-City
Tickets are available now at Ticketek , while the Akaroa performance tickets are sold at The Akaroa Information Centre, Ph. 03 3048600.
I think that's enough news for one posting. I hope you enjoy the record x

5th December
Retrievers,
Thank you so very much for your wonderful support of the Minerals & Rocks 12" project. I'm happy that people have enjoyed it so much. A few copies remain for order at dudleybenson.com
I'm currently in the icing stages of the album, and am very much looking forward to releasing it in New Zealand in February, with a National Church Tour to follow in March/April.
If Christmas Day for you isn't as idyllic as your friends' or neighbours', do tune in to Radio New Zealand National at 1pm for a broadcast of my entire performance at St. Matthew-in-the-City with Choir & String Quartet. Perhaps over lunch? For a full list of frequencies, or to listen online click here .
[Edit: Dec. 20th] I thought I'd drop that the Domino (Stef Animal Remix) has sat in the NZ Alt. Radio Chart for eight weeks, peaking at no. 2 and currently sitting happily at no. 4. The song has also featured in REAL GROOVE Magazine's 'Best Remixes of 2007' at no. 7.
Finally, I'm very proud to announce the winner of the Minerals & Rocks test pressing, for her redesign of Jasmine the Golden Retriever, and to post her artwork...thank you Hayley Preston of NZ/Australia.
Have a safe Christmas, Retrievers. I'm so looking forward to 2008, and to releasing The Awakening.
............................................................ ..........................................
Retrievers,
To order the Minerals & Rocks 12", follow me to dudleybenson.com.
I have one copy of the 12" test pressing of Minerals & Rocks to give away - Uber-rare! The competition is simple: redesign the Golden Retriever Records logo. Using Jasmine the golden retriever (right click and save on image below), do absolutely anything you like. My favourite design will be posted here, and that person will win a test pressing 12". Anyone, anywhere may apply by sending their design to [email protected] - entries close on October 31st.
............................................................ ..........................................
1st October
Retrievers,
Things are very much cottage industry with me at the moment. As well as finishing the recording for the album, I'm gently readying the Minerals & Rocks vinyl for pre-order next week, and cutting out all kinds of mineral samples to attach (read on to win a copy of the test pressing). So, finally, here is the wonderful artwork by Peter Stichbury.
Untitled (Dudley Benson), 2006 will be shown at Auckland's Stark White gallery on Karangahape Rd from Monday 8th October as part of Peter's new exhibition. The opening is on that very day, at 5.30pm. Do come along!
For anyone expecting my album in November - I am sorry, but it's had to be delayed until February. It's the right thing to do, though, and I can assure you I'm very happy with it. So that's why I've been so tardy with adding The Awakening Monthly Supplement - there are more months to fill and not enough songs! So yes, more research posted soon.
............................................................ ..........................................
27th August
Retrievers,
I've added two of the four mixes from the forthcoming Minerals & Rocks 12", due next month: Stef Animal's Domino remix, and Pacific Heights' Overture.
Furthermore...Hanna Lee's animated video for It's Akaroa's Fault (Nurimix).
............................................................ ..........................................
1st August
Retrievers,
For those who missed the St. Matthew-in-the-City performance with Choir & String Quartet: Radio New Zealand National is broadcasting highlights on two programmes this month.
- The first broadcast is a 'highlights' programme: Saturday 11th August, 4.10pm on Music 101...
- and the second is most of the show: Friday 17th August, 7.30pm on The Score.
Click here for the list of frequencies according to where in New Zealand you are, or here to listen online.
Thank you for the wonderful recording by Andre Upston of RNZ and Liisa McMillan for producing it.
Furthermore, here are some stills from the performance, by Ed Lust & Matt Kent.
The Minerals & Rocks 12" vinyl is very close indeed to release: watch this space for purchasing information, and do be in quickly because it's a strictly limited edition of 200. The next artist I'm incredibly privileged to announce is the remarkably clever and sincere Casiotone for the Painfully Alone , who is covering I Don't Mind.
Two tracks will be sent to radio this month, so listen out for Stefanimal's Domino remix, and Pacific Heights' Overture, both of which I'll preview here later this month.
A new month, a new piece of research in the Awakening Monthly Supplement. August: The Psalm for Antigone.
............................................................ ..........................................
1st July
Retrievers,
I do hope all are well. I've been busy in preparation for the release of the Limited Edition 12" remix vinyl, Minerals & Rocks, due in August. Another artist to announce: Stef Animal , remixing Domino. I believe this artist to be truly wonderful, and do suggest a listen to her live session on Radio New Zealand. Scroll half-way down the page and understand why I'm so thrilled.
The Awakening Monthly Supplement has again been updated - July: Audrey H.
............................................................ ..........................................
1st June
Dear faithful retrievers who so wonderfully and loyally appeard on Saturday evening at St. Matthew-in-the-City: thank you.
Exciting times ahead, as we head full steam toward Minerals & Rocks, the limited 12" vinyl to be released in August and made up of remixes and collaborations with local and international artists. I'll have more details shortly, but for now let me name-drop one of the four artists and songs involved in the project: Pacific Heights , remixing Overture.

16th May
Retrievers,
Tickets are selling quickly for DUDLEY BENSON Live at St. Matthew-in-the-City with Choir & String Quartet on Saturday 26th May from 8pm, so do not procrastinate: Either click the link, make paw tracks to Marbeck's Records, or call Ticketek on (09)3075000.
A reminder to fetch this weekend's Sunday (supplement of Sunday Star Times) for a profile/interview.
Finally, a certain sneaky photographer managed to get a wee view of St. Matthew-in-the-City one evening, with myself and the verger discussing secret plans for the show...

1st May
Retrievers! An exciting month indeed.
Click for remaining tickets to DUDLEY BENSON Live at St. Matthew-in-the-City with Choir & String Quartet on Saturday 26th May from 8pm, or call Ticketek on (09)3075000.
It's a print frenzy this month, with May's REAL GROOVE magazine featuring It's Akaroa's Fault (Nurimix) on the accompanying CD, and the 20th May edition of Sunday (supplement of Sunday Star Times) publishing a profile article by Rose Hoare.
Also, on Wednesday 2nd May I feature on 95BFM's Inside Track show, 9-11pm on Freak the Sheep .
A bumbling interview and premiere of the animated video for It's Akaroa's Fault (Nurimix) appears on Juice TV on Sunday 6th May at 12pm, Tuesday 8th May at 11am, and Thursday 10th May at 9pm. Just in case you want to see it three times.
I've returned from my small sojourn in the deep South, after a rather beguiling set of experiences leading my fellow investigators and I to not only Minnie Dean's grave, but also her former property, where she managed her baby farm and buried 'the unfortunate infants'. Photographs and report very shortly.
The Awakening Monthly Supplement is up in it's usual bloggy position.
May: On the Shoulders of the Earth.
See you on the 26th I do hope.

17th April
Click for tickets to DUDLEY BENSON Live at St. Matthew-in-the-City with Choir & String Quartet on Saturday 26th May from 8pm, or call Ticketek on (09)3075000.
Tickets are also available at Marbeck's Records, Queen St.
I'll be premiering material from The Awakening album, to be released in November, and in the amazing venue of St. Matthew's church, corner of Hobson & Wellesley Streets. Seats are limited so do book now.
This weekend I'll be at the very bottom of the South Island, visiting the grave of Minnie Dean at an apparently unmarked site of the Winton cemetery. Supposedly, locals refrain from speaking her name, but luckily a retriever pal from Cosy Nook managed to find a brave Winton resident who will take me to her. Hopefully I'll have a report typed up and on your desks at some stage in the coming weeks.

[edit 15th April] A very limited number of tickets will be available on Tuesday 17th April from 9am for the Auckland St. Matthew-in-the-City with Choir & String Quartet performance...be in quick and tell your pals. William Dart will be reviewing the Orders, Medals & Decorations EP on Radio New Zealand Concert, this Sunday (18th March) at 7pm.

1st March
Retrievers,
The date of Saturday 26th May is an important one if you are in Auckland, for that is the confirmed date of my next show, at the majestic St. Matthew-in-the-City, accompanied by choir, organist and string quartet.
Tickets will be for sale online very shortly (watch this space).
There are very few seats, so be sure to book early.
The Awakening Monthly Supplement is up.

1st February
Retrievers,
I hope all are well and excited about 2007. I've been busy in my cabana: sorting, sifting, scribbling up plans.
A break-down of 2007, Dudley Benson-wise:
May: Auckland performance with choir and string quartet at St. Matthew-in-the-City. Wonderfully exciting.
June: Limited Edition 7" acetate record released through Golden Retriever Records. Made up of remixes by other artists TBA, with cover artwork by Peter Stichbury . Edit: 12" vinyl, released in November
October: Audrey H. music video release directed by Ed Lust. Edit: January 2008 release
November: The Awakening album release NZ-wide. Limited Edition also available, details TBA. Edit: February 2008 release
Though the record is taking longer to complete than expected, I'm working very hard on it and am confident that it will be interesting and sell millions of copies.
To provide some sort of interrum during the ten months between now and November, I'll monthly post research on each of the ten songs from The Awakening. These will be in the blog section, titled The Awakening Monthly Supplement. I hope you find these interesting.
February: Willow.
New reviews of the Orders EP in the Reviews/Interviews blog above from Nick Bollinger for the NZ Listener and Matthew Crawley for Pavement.
I've added a cover of Jackson Browne's These Days, of Nico fame. It was recorded live in 2004 at the Great Hall, The Arts' Centre, Christchurch, and taken from The Pierrot EP.
Finally, here is a photograph by Peter Stichbury , painter of the artwork of the forthcoming remix 7".

Thanks for the loyal support this year with the EPs and shows. I've had a good time, and I think 2007 will be an interesting year. Be safe at Christmas, etc.
My six favourite records of 2006:
1. Max Richter - Songs From Before
2. Various Artists / Oliver Wang - Soul Sides Vol. 1
3. Joanna Newsom - Ys
4. Bachelorette - Isolation Loops
5. Joan As Police Woman - Real Life
6. Girl Talk - Night Ripper

This Friday's The Orders, Medals & Decorations EP launch - do come! I'll be playing from 9pm, doors open at 8.30pm. In an exciting turn of events, Hayley J. Hansell will be DJing afterward. There will be retriever badges, Support the Banks Peninsula t-shirts & singlets, and of course the new EP for sale.
I recently recorded four live songs with National Radio, which you can listen to online: National Radio Live Session . I performed On the Shoulders of the Earth, Willow, Asthma and It's Akaroa's Fault (Nurimix).
News shortly of a Christmas Eve show at the Wunderbar, Christchurch.

13th October
Hellope - Did you go to Craftwerk? It was a night of clever things and fun people - thanks to all Retriever supporters! It is tough you know, playing at a noisy festivally sort of do, but it was well worth it. Have a peek at Party Photo .
I'm *very* excited to type that my next show is in Wellington, in support of The Animal Collective who are currently on a bit of a tour. I haven't played in Wellington before so...YEAH! This show will also mark the first sale of copies of the very limited Orders, Medals & Decorations EP. Which I will have details of here in...like two weeks?
Finally, I'm super proud of Ed Lust , who took out Rising Star at the recent Handle the Jandal NZ Music video awards. Ed won for his Arkie video, Shut Eye. Ed has directed a video for me, yet to be released, and shot the cover to my 2007 record. The music I arranged for Ed's soon-to-premiere film Husband will be released as part of the new EP.
Bye for now, see you soon pals.
............................................................ ..........................................
15th September
Dear Retriever Pals, I'm pleased to write that my next performance will be as part of the October Craftwerk , with The Nudie Suits at the St. Kevin's Arcade in Auckland. I was fortunate enough to head along to the first Craftwerk, and I had such a fun time. Thursday 5th October, from 6pm.
Perhaps noteworthy, a sample of my song Seven Days from the Steam Railways EP has been included in the first episode of the third series of bro 'Town. If casually viewing, look out for a shower scene about 5 minutes into the show: TV3, Wednesday 27th September, 8pm.
The new EP is very nearly ready, and will be released, I believe, on 1st November, through Golden Retriever. I'll be following that with shows in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin (though not necessarily in that order) yet if I don't find a flat soon I wont even make it to November let alone a tour.
The Steam Railways EP has well and truly gone - running off to the place where all good dogs go eventually, she's nudged her naughty nose a couple of places up the IMNZ chart to no. 11.
............................................................ ..........................................
31st August
The Casiotone For the Painfully Alone show on 29th August was marvellous. James Duncan and I played supporting sets to a really attentive and respectful audience, and drumbabies CFTPA played a set of glitchy storytelling I shall never forget. Incidentally, Owen and Jenny were both very patient with my camera, which is new and no one was certain of how to turn off the flash. So after twenty or so terrible attempts, we chose to go under some red lights.
CTFPA: Jenny Herbinson, Owen Ashworth. And me!
In shock news, it was brought to my attention earlier this week that the Steam Railways of Britain EP has charted on the Independent NZ Music Charts at no. 13 for the month of August. Isn't that funny? Thanks for buying it, if you did.
Finally: I am looking for a flat in Grey Lynn/Ponsonby - our lease expires on September 30th and the idea of moving in with random sifters is slightly alarming. If anybody knows of a super wee flat needing a new person, please do message me.
New EP tracklisting very shortly, and tour news for October.
............................................................ ..........................................
17th August
I'm feeling very privileged indeed to be supporting the wonderful electronic songwriter Casiotone For the Painfully Alone (A.K.A. Owen Ashworth) on the Auckland leg of his current international tour. If you haven't listened to his new record Etiquette, I thoroughly recommend you do! I think it's superbly refreshing, and am so excited to see him live. The show will be at the Schooner Tavern on Tuesday 29th August, and we are also playing with James Duncan.
I'll have some more news really soon, I reckon.
............................................................ ..........................................

Big ups to you wonderful people who came to the Auckland Steam Railways of Britain EP launch on the weekend. It was such a fun night...a few pictures below, courtesy of Kim.
If you still haven't indulged...a few copies remain:

Also rather exciting: production has begun on an animated video for the Nurimix of It's Akaroa's Fault, directed by Hanna Lee, an incredibly talented animator and storyteller. Hanna's work is very dark indeed, and this project will be no exception. Expect a peek here in a couple of months...
Finally, I've started collating the next EP, currently untitled, for release in September/October. I'm not going for distribution this time round - sales will be exclusively at shows and through Marbeck's instore (Auckland) and their webshop. Bye for now!

14th July
Hello, I hope you who are reading are well and warm this mid-July. Jasmine the golden retriever has grown a warm, even goldener coat to brave the Grey Lynn chill, refusing the offer of those tartan dog-coat things.
I'm playing at The Odeon Lounge on Friday 21st July, so do pop in from 9pm for the sound artist Sam Hamilton, and of course me a bit after.
The Steam Railways of Britain EP has now sold out at the distributors, so if you're after one there are still some available at retail, although if Marty Jones of Sounds Rotorua has his way, there'll soon be nothing left at all...hehe
The Nurimix of It's Akaroa's Fault has been phatting up radio recently, with strong support from BFM, Radio One, Contact, and Darlene & Amanda at RDU. Meanwhile, National Radio are onto I Don't Mind, which is super also. Thanks very much to all the DJs playing my songs, I really appreciate it.
Finally, I've finished most of Ed Lust's Husband soundtrack, which is today being recorded by a string quartet in Wellington. Hopefully I'll release these pieces at some point.
Take care pals, see you at the Odeon next Friday, I hope ;)

26th June
Today is a special day indeed for me. It will start as most Mondays do:
Breakfast may or may not take place.
Probably, it will rain.
Yet upon the hour of 9.00am, a rumbling will be felt, deep beneath our feet. A distant toot shall be heard by a special, privileged few.
And the Steam Railways of Britain EP will be released, in a limited run of 75.

As I have heard it before, I shall be out hunting for the next Blandford 'In Colour' series...

Hi! I'm very excited about my new mix of the single It's Akaroa's Fault. We've been working on it for the last few weeks and it's ready for consumption. It's off to radio this week so if you like the mix please do let the station know, so as I may recieve my APRA $0.02 upon playing.
The talented beatboxer's name is Nuri Chan Kim, an uber-cool guy who I heard performing an improvised beatboxing routine last year and was totally in awe of.
27th May
Much news. If you were planning on catching the train on June 5th, I'm afraid you'll have to hold off on that ticket a tad longer. The Steam Railways of Britain EP is now being released to retail on June 26th. We now know that organising the 600+ person parade down Queen St celebrating it's release will take a bit longer to organise than expected.
I'm honoured to annouce that Dictaphone Blues, A.K.A. Edward Castelow, former Degrees K lead singer/songwriter will be supporting my show at the Wunderbar in Christchurch on Friday 23rd June. Mr. Blues has just returned from Sydney to thaw our frozen hearts with the warmth that is his voice. He may even sell a limited EP there, if you're lucky.
New Zealand Post refused to donate me 100 $1.50 stamps. These stamps are in recognition of 2006, The Year of the Dog, and the $1.50 in particular is a homage to the Golden Retriever. I politely wrote to ask for some stamps (to include in the Steam Railways EP) only to be cast down by the corporation giant, who say the business team didn't find my request appropriate. Watch out Mr. Warren Strother - Retrievers are, after all, a hunting breed!
Finally, the radio single from the EP will be sent to radio in early June. It's Akaroa's Fault is the name. I hope you like it.
............................................................ ..........................................
14th May
Good news! My first commercially released EP will be out on 5th June, under the mysterious guise of the Steam Railways of Britain EP. Don't bug out if you've just bought a Mushrooms & Toadstools EP from a gig, because the tracks are identical. I just ran out of fungi to cut out, and trains are the next best thing.
It will be released across NZ by Rhythmethod and Golden Retriever Records, in a run of 75. Independent stores like RGroovy, Slowboat and Marbeck's will stock it, but if you live in a cave on the valleys of the Port Hills and the weather is just too horrid to go and fetch one, message me and I'll sort you.

Torrential downpours currently typical of Auckland didn't stop my engineer Adrian and I recording the harpsichord arrangements for the record on Tuesday night. Oh no!
Thanks ever so much to Mr. Paul Downey, who let us record on his beloved self-made harpsichord, which I snapped below.
We recorded parts for I Don't Mind, Audrey H., Lingeress and Rapaki. The rain added a layer of creepy ambience...can't wait to mix. Nighty.
............................................................ ..........................................
2nd May
Well tonight I am recording the harpsichord arrangements for my record, The Awakening, which should be out late this year. Quite exciting for me, as the harpsichord is a fine and rare specimen in our land. Also, Christchurch pals - book me in on Friday the 23rd of June! I am playing at the Wunderbar. If anyone would like to support or has a suggestion, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll get Dad to do his South Island Toast Master's Competition winning speech. Again.

Hi...first news item EVER.
I'm working on the soundtrack to Ed Lust's upcoming short film, Husband. Yesterday I wrote most of the Overture. Max Richter comes to mind.
How are you??
