Readers wanted - I write books for kids

About Me

I write books for kids. Okay, I write all kinds of things but mostly books for kids. I've sold short stories, picture books, easy readers and most recently, my first verse novel Hugging the Rock was published by Tricycle Press. Hugging the Rock asks the question, what do you do when your mother runs away from home? It is a journey of the heart that does make many people cry, but it is a hopeful journey that portrays a relationship not often seen in children's books, a positive relationship between a girl and her father. In writing this book I gave myself the father I've never known.
This father/daughter story is good for anyone who has every felt let down by parent. It was just named an ALA Noteable Book!
Read an excerpt of the book now!
Pause for a brieft public service announcement.
You might wonder why (or you might not) I don't have any of the fancy backgrounds or glittery graphics or music to greet you when you visit. I chose to go the plain vanilla route here, partially because there are so many overdone pages that are too hard to even read and partially because I didn't want to deal with the programming headaches that often come with coding things for myspace. If you want to see my fancy stuff, head over to my website.
I now return you to your regularly scheduled profile reading.
Can I Pray With My Eyes Open? is a multicultural, non-denominational picture book that people of all ages are using to open discussions on prayer.
Oliver's Must-do List is the story of every child who wants a parent to stop working and take time to play.
You can read more about me and my books at my website or over at my main blog on Live Journal.
For all you history lovers Robert Smalls Sails to Freedom is the true story of a South Carolina slave who stole the ship he was working on and sailed to freedom with his family and some friends. He later went on to become a South Carolina congressman. This book is in the Millbrook On My Own History series. OUT IN PAPERBACK NOW! I've recently sold another On My Own History book to Millbrook on the Battle of the Alamo.
If you like to write, I keep a blog of writing prompts called Write on, Right Now
Oh, and Oliver has his very own blog here. Oliver is available to teachers, librarians and booksellers to visit for FREE.
My critique has formed a group blog called Wordy Girls. Come over and join us for some POETRY FRIDAY fun!
If you're looking for a speaker for your conference (it doesn't have to be a writing conference as I can tailor a speech specifically for your group) I hope you'll consider me. If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area and need a speaker for your local event or community group, let's talk.

Hugging the Rock is a middle grade verse novel for girls ages 9-12. It focuses on the positive relationship between a father and a daughter after the mother leaves. There are many things Rachel didn't know about her mom, including the fact that she suffered from bi-polar disorder. After her mom runs away, Rachel begins to pick up the pieces of her life. She learns how to deal with the secrets of her mother's past and realizes that the best kind of rock is one like her father, the kind you can lean on when the rest of your world is falling apart.

I'd like to meet:

First off - I am happily married and not interested in meeting anyone for anything other than networking. Please don't send me any of "those kind" of notes.

I also already have a fabulous agent at Writers House, so I'm not looking for representation either.

I want to meet other writers and people who love books for children. People who have a dream and want to work hard to make it come true. People who help other people make dreams come true. Librarians - oh I love librarians! They're the keepers of the keys. Teachers, teachers of all kinds because we can all learn from one another and teachers of young readers and writers - you do some of the toughest work I know and I appreciate you. Readers. Readers of my books, parents who read my books to their kids, people who love all books and especially children's literature from picture books to young adult.

I'd like to connect with community groups in my Silicon Valley area who would like a speaker or a workshop leader. Don't let the idea that I write books for kids turn you away.

Television:

I miss Buffy.

Books:

To ask a writer and a book lover to name just a few favorite books is impossible. Here are a few though, Because of Winn Dixie, Love That Dog and anything by Joan Bauer. My favorite time of the day, if I'm not writing, is to curl up with a book. A children's book. Give me a picture book, a middle grade novel, or a young adult novel and I am a happy girl.

Blatant self-promotion here: Picture books Oliver's Must-do List and Can I Pray With My Eyes Open? and the easy reader Robert Smalls Sails to Freedom Hugging the Rock

Heroes:

Librarians. Teachers. Booksellers. People who love children's literature. Elementary School Teacher. Elementary School Librarian.
