Hybrids young band members rock hard, get home by bedtimeBY KEVIN GARCIA
The Brownsville HeraldMembers of Hybrid, a local metal band, have to earn their audience at every gig. When we start setting up, people start leaving, said rhythm guitarist Noel Anorga Jr., 14.Then they hear us play, added lead singer Irving Reyes, 15.Hybrids members cant get in the front door at most venues they headline. They arent old enough to drive or vote, but they can entertain.Audiences are surprised by how we play, said Hector Jose Anorga. At 9 years old, the youngest member of Hybrid and the bands lead guitarist. He wasnt always originally set to be in the band. When it started I didnt want him in the band, said his brother, Noel Jr. But we couldnt find anyone else and no one that plays as good as him. Now, Hector Anorga is the most popular among Hybrid fans. Sometimes I sign autographs, he said.Still, he doesnt brag about his road to rock stardom. A few classmates know about his unusual after school job, he said, but not all of them are into that kind of music, so I dont make a big deal out of it.The East Brownsville group has been practicing for more than a year. They booked their first gig at the New Rising Sun where they played a played a benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina victims in September.
Keeping clean, on and off stage, has helped the band in their art.We sit down with the (club) owners and talk to them, tell them were not interested in drugs, we just want to play, Reyes said. They dont buy into gangs or drugs as a means to having a good time. This (music) is our reaction to all that, Reyes said. The band is determined to play their music, on their terms but its hard to sell a hard rock band made up of tweens and teenagers. For Hybrid, the music is the selling point.Thats the good thing about music, said drummer Xavier Altamirano, 15. Age doesnt matter as long as you care about it.Their thrash metal sound is a tribute to the music of Led Zeppelin and early Metallica, more than anything produced since the band members have been alive. The stuff now doesnt have that same feeling, Anorga said, adding their most popular song is The Will to Be.Its got a thrash punk rock beat with a metal riff, then it goes down to this really heavy head bang beat, Reyes explained. Its based on life here in Brownsville, added Altamirano. No one really notices you so you have to stand out.Reyes writes most of the groups songs while the team works together to develop the music. Already they have a demo disc with seven songs available at shows, and they cover metal classics when requested, but the group understands that music isnt everything. All four members plan to go to college and have an idea about what they want to study, except for Hector, who plans to make big decisions like that in high school.Hybrids biggest fans are at home. The band members parents support the groups passion to play, as long as they keep their grades up. They even let them practice in the Anorgas garage. The only thing I tell my kids is, as long as they keep their grades up, they can do it, said Noel Anorga Sr.He doesnt mind the band playing at clubs like Chapas Place (8 p.m., Friday), as long as they behave and stay safe. His most important rule is to get home by bedtime. My 9-year-old is kind of young and I dont want him to burn out, Anorga said. He loves to play, so I told my wife to put him to bed at 5 p.m. so we can get him up to play at night. What: Pamper Bash, First Anniversary of the PitWhere: Chapas Place, 3025 East 14th StreetWho: Hybrid and several other bandsWhen: 8 p.m., FridayAdmission:
[email protected] idea of starting a band arose from drummer Xavier Altamirano and singer/bassist, Irving Reyes. With influences by Metal Church, Metallica, Pantera,Iron Maiden, both set out to explore the underground scene in Brownsville ,Tx. Seeing many bands perform in local bars such as Panteon, March 2 Mayhem, and others they were encouraged to start a band of their own. Later running in to and welcoming in to the band rhythm guitarist Noel Añorga and later bringing in Hector Añorga they became the 4 piece band called Hybrid that played and compared to the old school metal.
