On their fifth record, Blind Zero opened the doors, allowing light to come inside. Unpretentiously, without restraint, like if they absorb simultaneously the creative brightness that blows from the outside and the luminosity that flows out from a band clearly running towards a new stage.
The Night Before and a New Day is loaded with an undisguisable brilliancy, which intensity can be instantaneously figured when we listen to the progressive cadence of Shine On the first single. Its only a fragment but it concentrates the libertarian spirit that we find in the all record.
They were the first Portuguese Rock band to achieve gold record status singing in English. In two years, they became one of the most praised names in the Portuguese musical scene.
Their first EP "Recognize" (95) sold out in a few days and became a collectors item.
Their debut album "Trigger" (95), produced by Ronnie S. Champagne, a Los Angeles based producer that had already worked with Janes Addiction, Alice in Chains, Remy Zero and Deconstruction among others... was the strongest punch that the Portuguese Rock music industry ever felt. It went Gold.
In 96, going onto something completely different, Blind Zero goes flexo: Flexogravity" (EP), is an experimental record with the Portuguese Hip-Hop band Mind da Gap, blending Rock, Hip-Hop, Industrial, Trip-Hop and Cabaret. "Flexogravity" got the award as the "EP of the Year".
Time for acoustic settings: "Transradio", one of the first European Enhanced CDs (CD Extra) exposed the most introspective side of Blind Zero with a wide selection of interactive material. Recorded in the studios of the most important Portuguese radio station (Antena 3), songs were dressed in entirely new acoustic sounds, outfitting a perfect acoustic approach to a Blind Zero 1 to 1 environment.
Then they were invited to perform in the Song Contest for Youth Programs in Europe (SCYPE), which gathers bands from all over the European continent. Blind Zero won.
Two years after the release of the bands first album, they started recording "Redcoast" (98). "Redcoast" is a Rock blend of ambiences, sounds, emotions and most importantly... good songs. This album was produced by Michael Vail Blum, an American producer, that had worked with Suicidal Tendencies, Madonna, Roxy Music, 3T, Goo Goo Dolls, Tura Satana, Jewel...
"Redcoast" was mastered at the Sony Studios, New York, by the Grammy Winner Marc Wilder.
After "Redcoast", BZ recorded with Mario Caldato, well known for producing major artists like the Beastie Boys, Beck, Money Mark... in the "Tejo Beat" (98) project, a record released under the assignment of the Lisbon Expo'98 World exhibition.
In 1999 Blind Zero wrote their new albums songs: "One Silent Accident".
One Silent Accident" was produced by Don Fleming (Sonic Youth, Hole, Posies, Screeming Trees, Teenage Fan Club, Gumball, Alice Cooper, ). The Portuguese National Press highly praised the subtleties and grace of "Another One" and "Lately", the contemporariness of "Daily Matters", the slow river thickness of "Seeds", the strong punch emotion of "Then You Wait", the psychedelic urbanity of "Lowstreetsidewalksequence" or the raging "Hell Around".
In 2002, they recorded the emblematic David Bowies Heroes, in an unofficial Record for the Euro´2002 Soccer Championship, featuring their own and personal approach of the song. It was a smashing hit.
In 2003, Blind Zero walked into the studio and recorded their best album ever: A Way to Bleed your Lover (2003). Referred by the Press as a timeless record, A Way to Bleed your Lover" is this Alternative Rock Band's brightest moment: sonically a project that matured out of sight and encapsulates the Band's step forward in song writing.
Acid lyrics, velvet intimacy and subtle sounds, make it a record of characters and emotions, reaching the borderline between the darkness and the stars.
In 2003, the band was chosen by MTV EUROPE as the opening act for the launch of MTV Portugal, where a pre-recorded concert was broadcast for the opening of the channel. This is the first time a Portuguese band recorded a live event with MTV.
After that, they played several major venues and Festivals and started their own Tour de Force, a club tour in small places where you could actually see peoples eyes and faces. Absolute intimacy and unique moments for the Band and fans.
A few months later, on the Edinburghs MTV Europe Music Awards 2003 Ceremony, they won the MTV Award for the Best Portuguese Act.
In December, Blind Zeros live performance was considered the Best Portuguese Live Act and A Way to Bleed your Lover was reviewed by the press as the Best Portuguese Record of the Year.
2005: the year of The Night Before and a New Day. This is not the spot where the circle links and closes. On the contrary, this is the moment where perspectives are redefined, where facts and events are expounded again, where horizons expand. Records reviews reached the unanimity: The Night Before and a New Day is the Portuguese record of the year, Blind Zeros best record ever.
Another step into the recognition that Blind Zero are one of the best Portuguese bands ever is that several International brands associated their name and products to Blind Zero: FIAT (with the release of the new PANDA 4x4); RAY-BAN; SONY PLAYSTATION (Shine On was chosen by PlaystationTM to be the song for their latest game, Tekken 5); CREATIVE LABS release a special BLIND ZERO edition of their MP3 player MICRO ZEN.
After the release of “The Night Before and a New Dayâ€, Blind Zero played for thousands of people and their passionate shows claimed for a subtitle: Portuguese hottest live band. The “Shine On†video was asked to be in the “Fantasporto†international film festival, in the short film section because of his unusually concept.
In 2006, they decided to go for something different: it was the time to play in small venues and auditoriums. Electricity turns into intimacy: pedal steel guitar, upright bass, and acoustic guitars. Featuring the 80’s cover of “The Cars – Driveâ€, Blind Zero exercises their rock songs: country and alternative folk, from the desert to the stars, between temper and solitude. During this tour, every single auditorium was sold-out.
In 2007, because of the huge success of the “almost unplugged tour†and “Driveâ€, Blind Zero released a “live unplugged best of†called “TIME MACHINE (memories undone)†(UNIVERSAL).
Blind Zero do not conclude a period, they break into a new path, always changing for the unexpected.
