Some Still Despair In A Prozac Nation

About Me

Described as a "stick of dynamite strapped to reality," (Scenery Zine), subQtaneous is a diverse conceptual, collaborative project. Ranging from brutal, pounding industrial to sarcastic hip hop set over carnival music to delicately layered trance, it has been compared to Pigface -- probably mainly because of its format, as well as Coil, Mr Bungle, and even Frank Zappa. (But really, why does it burn when I pee?)
In truth, like all of these acts, subQtaneous defies easy definition or categorization. Most of these kind of comparisons are generally pretty lame, and do an injustice to both the band in question and the band that is being used for comparison. As Dr. Timothy Leary said, probably while swimming in a cool pool of serotonin as big as the moon, "think for yourself."
The common thread, aside from the musicians and a sort of infectious sickness that lingers between the cracks, despite regular 180 degree turns in musical genre, is the idea of modern society disintegrating. Curcio described it in an interview with TOPY as a "pre-apocalyptic concept album."
subQtaneous had its humble beginnings as a midnight-oil side-project originally born in Orangeface studios and the Abyss of Hallucinations, (a studio where Choronzon rides the faders). In later college radio interviews it became legendary amongst the musicians who have performed on it. The reason is simple enough, if odd.
None of them actually recall laying down any of their tracks. Ever. Whether this is some sort of game on the part of the engineers and producers, who have a habit of feeding the artists everything from up, down and sideways to purple, or something far more sinister, is unclear.
As the years passed and material accumulated, it became clear that the project was paving an acoustic byway somewhere between the novel "Join My Cult!" (another project of Curcio's, released by New Falcon Press), and its sequel, which is passed out somewhere face down around the end of its first triumphant draft.
The following sample tracks are pre-masters which give a sense of the wide range of audio landscapes that are being terraformed through this collaborative project. Rather than square-pegging ourselves into one genre, this project takes the listener through their own auditory apocalypse.
