I believe the ending of a movie makes or breaks it... it doesn't necessarily have to be sad, but usually that means not ridiculously happy.
Some favorites: Harold and Maude, Virgin Suicides, Match Point, Heavenly Creatures, The Sweet Hereafter, Hedwig & The Angry Inch, City of Lost Children, Donnie Darko, Rushmore, Lost in Translation, Annie Hall, Orlando, Goodfellas, Rosemary's Baby, Halloween (the first one), Cape Fear (the first one), When Harry Met Sally, Gilda, Royal Tenenbaums, Secretary, House of Yes, The Shining, The Professional, Napolean Dynamite... and on and on...
I don't have cable anymore, but some fond memories of Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Daily Show, Strangers With Candy (RIP), Sex & The City (RIP), Most anything on the History Channel (Modern Marvels rules) or National Geographic Channel. Geeky ..aries of all kinds.
Anything by David Sedaris, true crime/biographies/history... most non-fiction, BUST magazine, And liner notes... I love good liner notes.
