The Sun Dance Wind River Wyoming, 2002
We first met Moose on the opening day of Antler Hunting on the Elk Refuge high in the Sheep Mountains of the Gros Ventre in Wyoming.
Moose happened upon us out of thin air like a ghost, his two long black braids wrapped in white ermin, a cloudless blue sky behind him. He politely nodded for permission to join us, and we nodded back, and he continued on the path up the ridge and joined us in the shade of a lone pine tree.
We shared our sage in prayer and sat in silence, taking in the beauty of all Great Spirit's Creation. After a while he spoke. He introduced himself, and said he had not found any antler. We replied that we had not found antler, either.
He said, sometimes what we find, is not what we are looking for. He invited us to attend the Arapaho Sun Dance at Wind River, Wyoming, saying perhaps that is why we had bumped into eachother under the little pine tree.
He gave us directions and he gave us his grandmothers phone number in case we got lost. We parted and the next day we headed over Togwatee Pass and to Ethete and the Wind River.
Upon our arrival the first day, we searched for Moose to thank him. We finally found his lodge, and when we asked for Moose, his family giggled alot and told us we had just missed him. We kept looking but were always told, you just missed him.
There must have been a thousand tepees. The four days we spent at the ceremony were beautiful. We were immediatly taken in and 'adopted' by one of the families, and they shared a few things with us about the history and purpose of the Sun Dance.
We met so many people, and we were invited to be blessed by the Sacred Buffalo Robe. Every night we listened to the Tribal Singers and their Drums until the sunrise broke like fire in the eastern sky.
On the final day we went to the shade lodge of his family to thank him for inviting us to this wonderful experience, and they told us then that Moose had crossed over 10 years before meeting us. Osiyo, Wado my Brother Moose, wherever you are.
I am a wife and a mother. I was born in Massachussetes, and raised in Daytona Beach. My husband and I now live in Northern Arkansas, Land of the Cherokee Nation. We have five kids, all grown and on their own. Our oldest is finally returning home after four years Active Duty in the Air Force. We have three grandsons, the youngest, AJ we will meet for the first time this coming. spring.

Dennis is a Native American leader, teacher, and activist;
founder of the American Indian Movement (AIM).
An Ojibwa Warrior from northern Minnesota,
Dennis Banks has dedicated his life to protecting the rights of America's indigenous people.
In 1968, Banks founded AIM to call attention to the plight of the American Indian people
and the systematic abuse of their rights.
The movement was involved in the occupation of Alcatraz Island where Banks attempted to force the federal government to honor the 371 treaties
between the Native Nations and the Federal Government, all of which had been broken by the United States.
Banks led the 1972 Trail of Broken Treaties to Washington D.C. where government officials refused to meet with the Native delegation
resulting in AIM's occupation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs office.
Banks also spearheaded the 1973 move on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota to end government corruption and abuse.
These activities led to the occupation of Wounded Knee and a 71-day siege that received national attention.
Banks was the principal negotiator and leader of the Wounded Knee forces.
Dennis Banks and 300 others AIM activists were arrested and tried for their involvement in Wounded Knee and Custer standoffs.
Today, Dennis Banks is national field director for AIM and chair of the "Bring Peltier Home" campaign to free the most prominent political prisoners in the US.
