Good sci-fi, good crime films, good fantasy, good animation - anything with strong characters in a tricky situation of an abound note. I also like that Clueless film with Alicia Silverstone

Sopranos, Deadwood, Six Feet, Under, Brasseye, Firefly...you get the picture

Books:

Currently on the Temeraire books (just about to start the third one, Black Powder War - check it out, Napoleonic wars fought ..onback). Also reading A Game of Thrones (Iron Thrones, Wolves, and lots of sex!)
