About Me

I'm originally from Chicago, but i've been living in London on and off for way too many years - with regular trips to Southern Africa to keep me sane. Hanging out in other parts of Europe more these days and hooking up with folks along the way. Life is good.As of late i've been working on a few projects in and around Europe and South Africa. More to say about that as things take shape. It's early days yet,(it's a steep learning curve), but things are starting to come together.

My Interests

Music (R&B, hip hop, house, opera, collaborative urban music forms from all over the place, jazz), motorcycles, the future of Africa as a continent, the culture and music of the African diaspora in all its forms permutations and possibilities, the concept of moral community, the future of community in urban settings, creative living, creative loving, and ...

Music:

Generally speaking I guess it has to be house, hip hop, reggae, kwaito and good old funky soul and R&B, but in my CD player at the moment: DJ Fresh from South Africa, Xavier Naidoo, Thandiswa Mazwai, Skin, Shuggie Otis, Kirk Whalum, Fela,Cesaria Evora, Teba Shumba, Freundeskreis, Joy Denalane, various arias from Carmen, and a mix of latin, house, hip hop and reggae compilations.

Movies:

Two of my favourite films of all time are the French film Diva and the original version of The Vanishing (the American remake was a travesty). At the moment I am loving Japanese and Korean horror - of the Asia Extreme variety, Japanese gangster films (think Beat Takeshi) and a good old thriller from wherever for distraction.

Television:

I've been watching way too many forensic programs of late, not sure how I feel about that, but it is what it is. Can't seem to stop watching CSI, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Little Britain, most things on BBC4 and very bad old Horror movies from the 50's and 60's.

Books:

Mostly academic cultural studies related non-fiction: Empire, Creating Spaces of Freedom, Against Race, Hostels: Sexuality and the Apartheid Legacy, Culture in Mind, Against Global Apartheid, The Other Within, and other leftovers from my academic life.

Heroes:

Brave and gentle people.
