Midwest was founded in 2000 in Varese, a town set in the natural beauty of the northern italian lakes and amidst the foothills of the Alps. The band is Francesco Ferretti (keyboards, brass), Paolo Grassi (drums, percussion), Francesco Scalise (bass, banjo), Matteo Gambacorta (guitar, vocals).
So far Midwest has recorded two albums (Homesleep Records) and a number of songs to be included in compilations. The debut album, released in 2002 and titled Town & Country, succesfully introduced them to to the european indierock scene, receiving great reviews from magazines and newspapers.
In particular, the english press (Mojo, Uncut, Time Out, The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph and others) noticed the band as one of the most promising european indiefolk acts.
A second record followed in 2005, named Whatever You Bring We Sing. Influenced by the attitude and sound of the late 60s, the album again revealed the different aspects of Midwest's music, acoustic and traditional yet melodic and experimental.
