Read this poem by EMILY DICKINSON
I heard a Fly buzz – when I died –
The Stillness in the Room
Was like the Stillness in the Air –
Between the Heaves of Storm –
The Eyes around – had wrung them dry –
And Breaths were gathering firm
For that last Onset – when the King
Be witnessed – in the Room –
I willed my Keepsakes – Signed away
What portions of me be
Assignable – and then it was
There interposed a Fly –
With Blue – uncertain stumbling Buzz –
Between the light – and me –
And then the Windows failed – and then
I could not see to see –

At first you think its a bit odd. How can a dead person be telling us what happened when they died. Then the more you think about it the more disturbing it gets. A fly is an image of decay but disconcertingly it acts almost regally; 'uncertain stumbling buzz'. How can the fly act so mannered when really its THERE FOR THE BODY - its portion of the 'keepsakes'! Not a very nice last thing to see or know. The speaker of the poem is waiting for a sign from God, for reassurance about the afterlife. The sign that arrives is the FLY (well thanks God!). Lastly, think about this.. the Lord of the flies is Beelezbub, so perhaps God isn't coming afterall???
Emily Dickinson is a genius.. And i love her because she's a feminist (although SHE probably didn't know it). Bit of an odd ball, never left her house much and wore a white weddingdress style robe thingie every day after she was thirty. She never married. A true recluse and an inspiration.
