l.a. story, wit, the big lebowski, fear and loathing in las vegas, eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, me and you and everyone we know, little miss sunshine, and other standard contemporary classics. the guy who played the pedasito in 'little children' was incredible.
i recently learned from noam chomsky that in the behind-the-scenes, executive world of television, the commercials are referred to as 'content,' and the shows are called 'fill.' i like when announcers of sporting events get into awkward arguments about things. that's because i am still what c. s. lewis would call 'uncharitable.' i also like that show in which a white guy walks into houses where they've lured what they call 'pedaphiles' in to embarrass them. my younger brother calls it the 'rape show.'
flannery oconnor. there's this story called "white rat" by gayl jones. it's damned fine. "the love song of j. alfred prufrock" always gets me. salinger. sam lipsyte. clive staples lewis. george saunders. jerzy kosinski. faulkner. emerson. swift. noam chomsky.
steve martin and flannery o'connor. teaching a chicken to walk backwards at the age of five is hard to beat. one of them did that. do you know which?
