About Me
Her sound can be described as raw, sophisticated and hauntingly melodic, but
in no way ordinary. Influenced by artists ranging from Bright Eyes and
Fionna Apple, to The Beatles and Jim Croce, Kate Myers, a Midwest born
singer-songwriter, is an electrifying up and coming artist. Currently based
out of Chicago, IL, Kate has an extraordinary ability to mix folk/rock
guitar or melodic piano with a haunting voice, creating a unique sound of
her own that's calming and quiet, yet strong and moving. Kate, now 23 years
old, began playing guitar at the age of 11, and was writing her own songs by
the age of 13. Kate began
using her songwriting as a form of therapy, self-reflecting on deep thoughts
and inner feelings which she transformed into lyrics. Kate's songwriting
narrates her perspectives on love, life, and loss that relates to any
individual.
"Music inspires my life, it's what I was destined to create," she says. She
released a self-titled debut album in May of 2004. In an effort to inspire
others with her music, Kate planted herself in coffee shops and basements of
music stores, gathering a loyal following in her hometown of Valparaiso,
Indiana. Kate continued performing every opportunity she could at venues
such as Chicago's House of Blues, The Windmill Brixton and 12 Bar
Club in London, Abbey Road in Manresa, Spain, and the National Auditorium in Andorra. While touring around, Kate has shared the stage with such artists
including Common, Office, Anais Mitchell, and Sleeping At Last. She released a follow-up album, Blanket Sky, in May of 2006 and is preparing for the release of her third full length album, Instand Clarification, in August of 2008. "On the few dates I caught Kate Myers live I found her absolutely enchanting and I can't even say exactly why.
I think I'm a sucker for that sort of artist who quietly slinks onto a stage with no sort of presence whatsoever, an almost apologetic charm, and as soon as they start to sing the room stops to watch what is going on.
Her voice is smooth but with rough overtones, most likely a natural talent with no training and whilst her guitar lines are simple and fairly similar across songs they compliment her voice brilliantly and succinctly.
On Blanket Sky & Live you lose the presence that comes from seeing her in the flesh, but you can still hear the strength of the song writing and the inherent beauty of her music.
It won't suit everybody, it's very American (something that normally puts me off) in style, sound and lyrical content, but give a few tracks a listen and try to catch Kate Myers live, then maybe you might see what I mean." - Chris Chincilla (ex- Art Brut member) http://angryape.com/
