In the 1970s to refer to one as having a voice of velvet was to pay them a tremendous compliment. A voice with the softness, the smoothness and the depth to compare to the fine material, a voice that sounds to the eardrum as velvet feels to the skin, a voice so unmistakable would be rare.While still in diapers, singer/songwriter Velvet Matthews would accompany her father, Charles, to his one man shows around Olympia, Washington. Charles knew Velvet was destined to sing. She was singing before she was talking, he says proudly. When she was four, her mother, Debra, found her alone in a dark room, standing unsteadily on a cardboard box. Grasping a broomstick in her tiny hands, she put on a powerhouse performance for the shadows in the quiet room. This is where Velvet first let it be known that she would be not just an entertainer, but a captivating spirit that shines best in the spotlight.Never losing sight of that dream, she has played clubs since the age of 14. Her numerous performances over the years include fairs, state championship games for crowds of 6000+ and headlining several packed shows including the Temple Theatre. Since moving to Nashville, she has appeared at many writers nights and is a regularly featured artist in Tim Stewarts monthly Writers Night held in east Nashville, which is always standing room only.Describing her sound as contemporary country with a touch of soul, Velvet sights Ronnie Milsap, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Don Henley, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey as some of her influences. More than just recording, she enjoys being a part of every creative aspect of being an artist. I love to use my abilities (singing and playing guitar and piano) as opportunities to not only share my hardships through my music, she declares, but also to give my audience a breath of hope with every obstacle or trial they relate to within my music.
