John Holmes , who Im I ? One would say a man of many talents ranging from drawing , acting, comedy , to his first love music. Since the age of 2, I had always been interested in music. My father was a song writer of the 70’s Band director, and a jazz drummer for different bands in Hollywood. With that in my life I was around his music often in the home sitting next to him while he would write and play the piano. Naturally I caught on to the keys. I remember pops placing my hands on the keys making me strike the notes that would compliment what he played. He also would write notes for me to play and chords as well before I knew what they where. He had high hopes for his boy. Little did Dad know I was paying attention to more than just that. At 3 I was playing chords on the piano I had hands for the keys all my life seemingly . By 6 years of age I was reading music fluently and playing trumpet in my elementary schools orchestra. I was the only 6 years old in the orchestra the rest was 11 and 13 years of age. My ear for music had become ridiculous blowing out tunes I heard on the radio even with my trumpet. By the time I was 11 I my parents enrolled me into USC performing Arts Academy which is now called R.D. Colburn School of music. Here I studied 2 years with other students until my instructor approached my parents with the thought of it being a better Idea for me to have private lessons instead of group. He found it to be better if I had private lessons based on my advance knowledge I had of music at my age over the rest of my class and based on my ear for jazz. That was amazing to me. Cause I was the youngest child there too. With the average age between 19 and 25 years old. My teacher Jeff Lavendor was his name, heard jazz in my style and thought that I would excel better with private lessons cause the regular class was to slow for me. I often would add on to the music to amuse myself and the audience in recitals. My parents could not afford the private lessons at $389 a week . To make a long story short I bounced around from school to school. Finally leveling out in college and finally receiving Private scholarship awarded to me from El Camino College. I studied with Howlett Smith who you can see on my page. This man is Great. This is where I learned the powers of voicing. It was tough cause I really had to use my ears cause Howlett is Blind ( you really should listen to this man sing and play and whistle) Jazz , Soul and Funk is where my heart lives. I want to help contribute to this genre of music. I feel that we are getting away from the old jamming days of music . I love a real funky piano on tracks now days and that’s something I don’t hear much of. This is why you hear it on my tracks and will continue to hear it from days on.. to come.My credits: range from studio work for many different local Los Angeles artist to even a few known artist of there times.. Like Krazy Bone , Mokensteff, Donald Vega, L.V. The El Camino Big Jazz Band, and the I even played brass in the Los Angeles All city Marching band. The last one I take pride in cause its an honor band for the Pasadena Tournaments of Roses which Southern California Holds every year. I also have worked for places like Warner Brothers Records, and A&M Records.Moments of Truth. The truth is that I feel out of love with the music game with all the sharks and backstabbing Hollywood had to offer in the game, and took a regular white collar job as an Accountant. Thinking that I would be fine receiving a decent salary and benefits , shortly became a depressing site. So 2005 I began my journey of pursuing my music and my dream and love of the art. I don’t care at all for back stabbers, and back biters. But with every Occupation comes hazards and this Im learning. I will make it in this game to become one of the best music producers and musicians in my own right and that dream is becoming a reality. Slow and steady wins the race. Thank you!
