With a fluid but structured style, self-described as clean-edge graffiti meets musical conceptualism and a very impressive portfolio, Charles Clary may just blow your mind. His B.F.A. in Studio Art comes from MTSU where, during his junior year, he developed a way of painting that simultaneously mixes ideas of intricate symphonies and galactic images. Because his style is so unique, Charles has gained candidacy for the graduate program and Savannah College of Art and Design, which he hopes to attend in the fall of 2006.
His work has been exhibited at the City Hall Rotunda, The Grind, and Rose Center Gallery; sever locations in Morristown, Johnson City, and Kingsport. He has done illustrations for PBS and the Red Pumpkin Press, and has also collaborated with author Leonard Lewis on a childrens book entitled Why Do Flies Eat Doggy Poop which contains about 60 whimsical illustrations.
For the last 18 months Charles has been focusing on an ever-expanding series of acrylic paintings featuring musical staffs, drum guys, and organic shapes painted onto old drum heads. There are currently about 30 paintings in this series, all heavily influenced by music, so much so that Charles, who is also a drummer, uses a technique called action painting to create his seemingly simple organic shapes. This is achieved by fastening several dowel rods together, dipping them in paint, and actually playing the drums. The shapes that emerge are then transferred to his work.
When asked where he finds inspiration Charles says, Its all music, every last bit of it. Ive played that shape. His drum guys, which appear in each painting, are little creatures that store the music, which powers them, in little bubbles, and they help the listener interpret the music. If the creatures are white or hollow theyve not yet fully interpreted the music. His art may look simple at first glance, but that is clearly a misconception. Its not elitist art. If you want to delve deep into my work you can do that.
Charles major influences include Inka Essenhigh and Matthew Ritchie, both experimental contemporary painters; Dalek and Mars 1, graffiti artists; and John Cage, an experimental composer. So its obvious he prefers contemporary and conceptual art, but he says, People are going to say realism isnt the way of the future, but you cant discount it. Most contemporary painters are as good as they are because theyve gone through the realism phase and have learned how to do it the way history expects us to do it. I give my props to realism, I respect it, Ive done it. I just choose not to do it right now.You Are A: Puppy !

You scored as William Wallace. With his warrior's heart, tactician's mind, and poet's soul, Wallace was a brilliant leader. He just wanted to live a simple life on his farm, but he gave it up to help his country in its time of need.
