About the film:
Taking us through the early days of the fledgling league, Blood On The Flat Track: The Rise of the Rat City Rollergirls tells the story of the resurgence of roller derby in the U.S. and Seattle’s own “do-it-yourself†league, The Rat City Rollergirls. The league, now comprised of four regular season teams - Derby Liberation Front (DLF), Grave Danger, Sockit Wenches, and the Throttle Rockets - are populated by 70+ players/owners who are known to the world almost exclusively by their clever sobriquets. Trackside action punctuates the interviews and discussion with many of the fan favorites, including Miss Fortune, Basket Casey, Shovey Chase, Femme Fatale, D-Bomb, Burnett Down, Betty Ford Galaxy, and Dirty Little Secret.
In addition to their regular season, the league has created an “All-Star†team to compete nationally against other leagues. Top athletes from DLF, the Sockit Wenches, the Throttle Rockets and Grave Danger start skating with, not against, each other with hopes of winning a national title. In 2006, they discover that the team to beat is the Texas Rollergirls - the founders of the current roller derby incarnation and a “big sister†league to Rat City. The film takes us to Tucson, and follows the Rollergirls as they host a tournament at Bumbershoot in hopes of defeating the best league in the country.
Much more than miniskirts and fishnet stockings, the Rat City Rollergirls are a refreshing reminder of what it is to be proud of your hometown athletes.
