It has been said that most great things come out of a combination of planning, luck, chance, courage, error and talent. These things are all part of the history that now brings Sunday Matinee to the masses.
A brainchild of lead singer/songwriter Gary Godman, the band did not even take shape until almost all the songs for their debut cd had been written. Gary turned to his friend, former band mates, and veteran musicians Eric Patton on drums and Johnny Lightfoot on lead guitar. Their interest in the music and chemistry performing together was immediate and fervent. With the addition of Chris Barlow on bass, the band was complete and began recording in early 2006.
Gary took on the arduous role of recording engineer as well. Spending money that he still isn't sure he has, Gary created his own digital studio. Soon after, out of the smoke and ghosts of the basement of the old IRS building in Covington, Kentucky emerged "Sunday Matinee". The band, though its members are seasoned veterans, is new to the scene.
Boasting sincere and unfeigned lyrics sung over multiple layered harmonies, both vocal and musical, with complex orchestration all matched with a clever and inventive rhythm section, Sunday Matinee is packed with the vitality, relevance and the imaginative and prolific songwriting ability necessary to transcend marginal accomplishment and post major label success.
