About Me

My name is Brent and I'm a singer/songwriter from Ellaville, Georgia. I had the oppurtunity to fly out to Los Angeles and record my debut album with Shooter Jennings and his band, The 357's also, some other great musicians, Jason (Rowdy) Cope, and Chris (BA) Powell, Josh Day. I can't express how amazing that experience was! I love getting comments and messages from everyone on here so don't be a stranger!
Americus is a small town in Georgia where traditions seem unchanged by time. It's the kind of place where you can still find a general store and strangers say hey and passers' by wave. Singer-songwriter Brent Cobb was born in this idyllic town in 1986 and soon after raised in Schley county, Ellaville Georgia. A guitar was put in the youngsters hands early in life. "My father is a singer/musician and he has jammed in a country/southern rock/motown band ever since I can remember. He and my mama encouraged me to write and play. My mama can sing too but it's her brothers, David and Brian Rigney, who introduced me to the music of Eric Clapton, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Bob Dylan and many other greats".When Brent was around 3 years old, he made his debut concert appearance. Well, sort of. "The teacher asked us to take turns singing songs we knew and I went ahead and did There's A Tear In My Beer". The Hank Williams Sr. standard didn't sit too well with his Sunday school teacher but there it was. Brent Cobb: Country Singer was born! A few years later, when he was 7, his father, Patrick Cobb, was offered a solo record deal with the Nashville division of Epic Records. With two young kids at home, the life of touring didn't seem like an option for the veteran performer. ""My dad didn't want me and my sister to grow up and ask where he had been all our life. But that didn't stop him from continuing to play the area clubs with his band Slaughter Creek. These performances would have a meaningful impact on Brent and help to further define his musical development. While other 13 year olds were busy playing baseball cards or killing time on video games, Brent was working on his first original songs. "Me and my friend Dylan Lee would get together, grab a couple of guitars and sit around a camp fire every weekend. It eventually turned into a nightly jam session. As the meetings progressed, so did the quality in the writing. "One of the songs we co-wrote was called Times Rolls On and I actually got to sing it at my high school graduation". Around this time Brent joined local outfit Mile Marker 5. Comprised of musicians that span the ages of 18 and 34, they hit the local live circuit and gained a devoted following. Many times, Brent wasn't old enough to even be in the venues they played let alone perform there! In early 2006, at a family gathering in Georgia, Brent met a cousin who had come in from California. It turned out that his relative was producer Dave Cobb. "We got to talking about music and he told me he produced Shooter Jennings. Me and my friends were listening to Shooters album non-stop around that time!" On half a whim, the young singer/songwriter slipped his cousin a demo to take back with him to L.A. Brents uncle, David Rigney, recorded the tracks in Nashville, and while the singer was confident in the material, the recording was just voice and acoustic guitar.Dave Cobb was floored and admittedly shocked by the strength of the material. He played Shooter the demo and the outlaw rocker couldn't believe that a 19 year old had written the songs! "Two days after I gave my cousin the tape, I get a call from Shooter Jennings! He told me that they were gonna fly me out to L.A. to record the songs". This kind of news would have been enough to capsize the singer but there was much more to the story! Upon landing in California, Dave Cobb let him know that the backing musicians on the recordings would be no other than Shooter and his band the 357s! The actual sessions were taking place at the legendary Hollywood Sound studios. For his debut recording experience, Brent was playing in the big leagues! With so much to take in, California proved to be an all around learning experience. "I drank my first latte there and it cost almost $4!" I called up my buddy back home and he told me the first thing he was gonna do when I get back home was buy me a 39 cent cup of coffee to bring me back to earth! All culture shock aside, the sessions for Brent Cobb's debut album couldn't have gone smoother. Shooter and his band treated the songs and arrangements with the kind of care and attention usually reserved for veteran acts. The thing about his debut album, NO PLACE LEFT TO LEAVE that initially grabs your attention is the rich and melodic flair of Brents voice. It's no wonder he cites people like Hank Sr. and Johnny Reznik of the Goo Goo Dolls as influences. Cobbs almost cinematic storytelling in songs like Black Creek are steeped in the tradition of classic American songwriters such as Willie Nelson and Jimmy Webb. Named after the two traffic light town the song was inspired by, Richland comes in with swinging for the fences with shuffling guitars and a hyper paced rhythm that never does let up! "My grandpa bought some land in Richland there years ago and there's a voting house there from the 1930s. My dad and his friends used to throw big parties there. When we got older, me and my buddies took over! We have had some wild times there!" All teenage angst aside, there is also a warmer side to be found on the album. It's nowhere clearer than on the single, Dirt Road In Georgia. The lyrics were written while he was going through a break up with his high school sweetheart. The melancholic track, featuring some terrific keyboard flourishes by Shooter Jennings, has already gained an audience through Brents MySpace page and key radio airplay from WISK in Georgia. With an album chockfull of potential singles and word of mouth building, Cobb cannot wait to make the inside of a tour bus his new home.Brent Cobb at Buck's
