Having studied with some of the worlds finest musicians, Giles' virtuosity is not only recognized among critics and in academic circles but is also affirmed by numerous awards and extensive solo experience. He has performed with such leading arts organizations in Toronto as the Canadian Opera Company, the Aldeburgh Connection, Opera In Concert, and Queen of Puddings Music Theatre Company. Giles has also performed alongside such leading chamber music groups as the St. Lawrence String Quartet and the world-renowned Canadian Brass. He joined the Brass on stage at their 2004 Christmas concert in Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall, performing holiday hits and folk song arrangements with equal aplomb.
He has also begun to perform in Britain with several concerts at the prestigious Aldeburgh Festival in England, a touring production of Puccini's La Boheme with the Scottish National Opera (performing the role of Colline), and the June 2006 European premiere of a Canadian opera called The Midnight Court, to be performed in the Linbury Theatre of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. A finalist in the International Vocal Competition in Marmande, France in August 2005, Giles won first prize in the Great Lakes Regional Voice Competition, held by the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) in April 2004, and received the Distinguished Graduate Award upon commencing from the University of Toronto's Opera Division in June 2005. Giles' operatic roles include Figaro in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro with the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts, Superintendent Budd in Britten's Albert Herring with the Aldeburgh Britten-Pears Festival, Pish-Tush in Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado with Toronto Operetta Theatre, and Somnus in Handel's Semele with Opera In Concert and Toronto's own Aradia Ensemble. He has also appeared on four international Naxos recordings with the Aradia Ensemble, including Rameau's Castor et Pollux and Handel's Rinaldo.
Always looking to exceed his own standard of excellence, the young Toronto-born baritone ambitiously undertook the recording of his debut solo album while completing a master of music degree at the University of Toronto's Opera Division. The result, AND SO IT GOES (Opening Day/Universal Music Canada), is a sophisticated blend of fresh interpretations of familiar favourites and genre-defying original compositions, all delivered with the finesse of a seasoned artist.
