It was a natural progression for John Jones to start manning the decks at the age of 15 after collecting specialist dance (house) music for a previous 3 years, on top of already possessing an extensive collection of soul, mo-town and funk albums. I was influenced by the likes of Masters at Work, MK, Fire Island, David Morales, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Joey Negro, Mood II Swing and X-Press II.
I came to link up with Hed Kandi in 2000 after a number of Residencies. The label was growing at a fantastic rate and with the expansion of live events; the requirement for additional DJs managed to cross my path because of a friendship with ex Hed Honcho Mark Doyle and Hed resident Andy Norman. I played at a couple of gigs and fortunately my style was in keeping perfectly with the Hed Kandi ethos, but more-so which is unique for every Kandi member. I fitted, both musically and in personality. Finally I now got the chance to play my music to my kind of people who wanted to actually hear what we giving them. For a DJ on a consistent basis, there is nothing better. 5 years later and having toured as a Kandi resident worldwide in cities such as New York, Miami, Sydney, Christchurch (New Zealand), San Francisco, Bogotá (Columbia), Reykjavik, Moscow, Ibiza, Majorca, Marbella, Glasgow, Dublin and Barcelona (with the stand out having to be David Morales club Stereo in Montreal which was mind-blowing and also playing New Years Day @ Gatecrasher with Erick Morillo in 2006) alongside 14 residencies up and down the UK and having guest mixes / appearnaces on Galaxy Fm, Smooth Fm, Kiss 100 in the Uk and Cada Cien in Ibiza.
I can honestly say that I am having the time of my life at the moment. Its what I have worked and strived to achieve and through Hed Kandi we are giving people up front in your face quality house music, whether it be deep underground funk to uplifting commercial vocal dance. Its nice to be able to go to a gig and deliver what people are going to want, varying gigs have different tastes so you can go from a nice soulful disco vocal session, to a full on twisted dirty house set. Its great to have that free range.. thats what Kandi is to me, accessible stylish house music as a product that looks, smells and tastes good, for people that love music.
Production-wise I have just completed my first track alongside Dylan Rhymes (Beaver & Jones) and Katherine Ellis which is getting alot of support and Good label interest at the mo, aswell as appearing on the next HK "Twisted Disco" album. On top of that we have also been asked to remix the new D.O.N.S - Big Fun single on Hed Kandi/MOS due out in Spring 2007. Plus we have a batch up new material up and coming.........so watch this space yar'll
Hed Kandi has given me a chanel to express myself through the brand on a world-wide scale, playing good music to good people who love it. Just as much as I do.
See you on the dance floor
