I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

Deep, funny, easy-going, slightly radical, extremely goofy, laughter enthusiast, politically involved, artistic rebel.
My family means the world to me.
My life is an interesting story...in summary: born to CHilean exhiles in Santa Barbara, California. Lived in Venezuela, Michigan and Illinois. Spent my childhood years in a south suburb of CHicago living what I thought was a carefree life.
Come to find out later we lived a whole year off of church offerings and ate rice and beans every day. I do remember one day a girl asked me "Are you Mexican?" Her tone was so negative and assuming. I knew it must be something bad. I asked my mother and she told me "No mija, you're Chilean". I sighed in relief though not really understanding what it meant to be from Chile til I was living there well into my teens, but I knew from that day forward that I despised being seen as different. From that day forward I stopped speaking Spanish and denied my heritage. Oh and my preschool teacher told my parents I was stupid and should be kept in a playpen all day long because I didn't speak English.
This is exactly what public schools do: teach you to deny your heritage, your Latinidad, your Africanness, your Indigenous roots. Yup. Stupid songs about Columbus as a hero stuck in my head from history brainwashing class...No songs about Chavez tho, maybe a paragraph, definitely no Che.
Graduated from International High School in CHILE and sought out to get an education thinking it'd be easy; I'm a citizen, but no! (insert long story here. lol.)
Just moved to DC after seven years of completion in Champaign, Illinois. Surprisingly, it's been a smooth transition, however, this may be due to the fact that I may be tricking myself into believing this stay is temporary. I suppose it helps that I have good social skills and make friends easily...Nonetheless I must admit it, Champaign can really grow on you...or maybe its the friends and family I met there. I miss my friends dearly....but I know this is where I'm meant to be right now.

These are the only true natives of this land. Everyone else IS an immigrant that came willingly or forcely...
Pay attention to the percentages of slaves that were taken to Central, Caribbean and South America. Less than 5% of African slaves came to the United States. Slavery existed in many Latin American countries. We are ONE people. Next time they try to pin Black on Brown or Brown on Black, tell them to get their facts straight! We share a common lineage, a common history of oppression, a common dream of liberation and self-determination. Vivan los AfroLatinos! :)
A photo I took at an Immigration rally in front of the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Office in Washington, D.C.
We must rebuild the Beloved Community where we are our brother's keeper and standing on our sisters shoulders.
