BNS Sessions
8/10
I have no idea what to make of The Werewolves, all I know is that I like them. They’re like some weird mix of Lou Reed, The Doors, Iggy Pop and Bauhaus. I feel schizophrenic just listening to them. In a good way. You can always tell you like a band when the record stops and you scream “hey!†Yea, I said record. They were kind enough to send me a 7†of the EP. Noice. Umm, piss off, I’m gunna go listen to it again.

"Werewolves ‘Pill Box’ (BNS Sessions). there’s only 500 hand numbered copies of these babies around and given that ours is number 210 these may well be selling fast - if not then why not we ask because this could quite possibly be the coolest double seven inch on the planet right now. Werewolves from what we can gather hail from New York and beyond that there’s bugger all else we can tell you about them - hell even their record sleeve refuses to pass up the usual end credits section of email, web site, contact numbers and my space tags - all we have managed to glean is that copies - if you should so feel you need one - and lets not beat about the bush here you do - are available via that much respected sound emporium Piccadilly records - so if anyone can help in shining some light on these dudes then all info would be greatly appreciated. Anyhow self released as said previously limited to just 500 copies and featuring 4 cuts pressed up on two slabs of seven inch wax, ’pill Box’ leads the charge - a stunning lazily reclining shade wearing slice of soft psyche shimmer pop that all at once freewheels between elements Rose of Avalanche, My Bloody Valentine, Ultra Vivid Scene and Suede to radiate with a statuesque classicism that these days is a rare thing to come by. This smoking emaciated beauty is dipped in all manner of feedback reverb and finds itself braided longingly with a deliriously acute hazy lull at the centre of which is despatched a softly purring buzz sawing bubblegum pop groove. The darkly 60’s sourced ‘Nose bleeding girl’ features over on the flip - a superbly slow to unwind hip hugging babe smoked and lysergically laced with a soft psych blues sheen this cool as f*ck babe sounds like some sort illicit union borne of an impromptu meeting of the Walkmen and the Autumn Leaves that mid way through without warning rips it up with frenzied angular intent. ‘Haunt’ opens the proceedings on disc 2 - a strutting honey combed beauty drenched in chorus’ of shimmer laden fuzz feedback that to these ears hover and hum like something not to distant from the Pixies ‘Motorway to Roswell’ though on this occasion treated to a sunny side up serving of chilled low tempo Dinosaur JNR. The mooching and prowling ‘Heaven or Hell’ wraps up the set, a monolithic swamp infested blues bruiser that nods to the darker Doors elements of the Bunnymen’s ‘Flowers’ set and deeply set with the ravaged air of the lazy hazed persona and voodoo-esque grit of early career Gallon Drunk as though pierced with the mindset of a seriously screwed up Flaming Stars - a bit of a gem unless I’m very much mistaken - and I’m not. Joint single of the missive." - losingtoday.com [uk mag & music blog]
