Fine Art and Deep House By Kortez

About Me

Biography:Kortez is a visual artist and DJ who resides in Freehold Boro New Jersey. His work includes mixed media collage, acrylic, watercolor and works on paper. The subject matter varies from social commentary to pop culture. Consistent elements in his work are bright colors and bold lines.Drawing since the age of 3, Kortez had the guidance of his parents. His stay at home mother made life very art friendly by encouraging drawing and painting. She also opened his eyes to artists like Warhol and Picasso. His father was a marine biologist who shared abstract drawings based on single celled organisms. During his years in High school Kortez became interested in Graffiti. This led him to the NYC underground movement. Club music, Hip-Hop and the downtown art scene were appealing. He began to mimic and morph what the graffiti artists were doing on the L.E.S. (Lower East Side) and the Bronx. Keith Haring and Basquait also became inspiring heroes during this time.In 1989 Kortez enrolled at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial arts majoring in fine art. Under the watchful eyes of instructors like Hugo Bastidas and Ted Bonavito, He developed his current style of painting. Hugo encouraged the artist to think about composition, subject matter and using art as communication. Bonavito taught technique and encouraged experimentation. In the years to follow Kortez has exhibited in several group shows in the NY Tri State area. He also incorporated his love of DJ culture into his art by performing live painting in area nightclubs. The giant Step sessions with DJ Ron Trent opened many doors. One of his paintings created at The Giant Step sessions was exhibited at the Levi's headquarters in San Francisco. He also received sponsorship from Evian Water and LG Phones to perform at the Giant Step events. In the summer of 2004 he had opportunity to be curator of Freehold's first emerging artists gallery called Gallery31. The gallery supported local artists like Bernardo Corman, Sue Sitar, Neville Brown and the late John Kochansky who was a very close friend. Known New York artists such as Brooklyn's Danny Simmons and Reynolds have also exhibited at Gallery 31.The Gallery closed in early 2006 but that hasn't stopped Kortez. Currently he is hard at work painting and is continuing his love of DJ culture by painting live and Djing at local events. Please contact me at at the following email addresses, [email protected],[email protected] or reach me via myspace. My Interests

The pieces above were in my last show. They were inspired by a very good friend who passed away last year, John Kochansky. He always worked fairly fast and utilized any and every material available to him. Thats why I did these on paper. The materials were handy, I worked very fast and I want to move them out! All selections are originals and they are for sale. Each one is executed in ink, oil stick and pastels on 8" X 10" bristol. The total number of drawings is somewhere around 60 to 70, all done in one sitting! E mail me for any additional details and prices.

I'd like to meet:

Patrons of the arts and those looking for a DJ that spins DEEP HOUSE and CLASSICS. I would like to provide art (fine art, graphics) to idividuals who cutting edge and diverse.

Music:

Music has always influenced my art. Thats the main reason most of my friends are in the music business or love music in general. As an artist, I always dreamed of doing art for my favorite musicians. Imagine the art that your seeing on marketing material, CD covers and CD's, clothing, DJ slip mats and other DJ gear, music videos, film and live painting in the clubs. My personal favorite use for my art would be the painting in the entry hallway of the multi million dollar home. When I dream, I dream BIG!!

Movies:

David Lynch, Spike Lee are my favorite directors. Blue Velvet, Baaaadaaaassss, BOMB THE SYSTEM, The Red X Tapes, Hang the DJ, Maestro,It' all gone!, Purple Rain, X, Carlito's way (Rise to Power), Basquiat, I shot Andy Warhol, SuperFly, Truck Turner, The Mack, Which way is up?

Television:

I don't watch TV on a regular. But I do appreciate good idiotic entertainment. But I'm growing tired of BET, MTV and the FOX network. I wonder why?

Books:

Soul on Ice - Eldridge Cleaver. Down these Mean Streets - Peri Thomas. Negrophobia - Darius James RUN NIGGER, RUN - H. Rap Brown. My life at the Paridise Garage - Mel Cheran.

Heroes:

My Brother Demmick Peace, My Mom (Marva Robinson) and Dad (Donald Robinson) and My Uncle Neal.As an artist I have to say Jean Michael Basquiat not because of his art but because of the boundaries he broke during and after his life. His work is great but doesn't influence my art. Andy Warhol and Kieth Haring. In music it would have to be Prince and Larry Levan.
