MICHELLE SHAPROWThis singer/songwriter/producer graduated from Yale University with a degree in psychology and philosophy and an emphasis on music cognition. While in school she released music with Warner Brothers Records, Om Records and King Britt’s label, FiveSix. She’s worked with R&B artist Van Hunt, Hip-Hop artists Apl from the Black Eyed Peas, Mr. Lif, Rich Medina and Now On, as well as house and deep soul music legends Vikter Duplaix, King Britt, Jay Denes, and Jay J.
Her single with Warner Brothers – “If I Lost You†– reached No. 1 on the BBC London radio station 94.9 FM, landed a spot on Giles Peterson’s top-twenty list, was in regular rotation on Los Angeles’ famed KCRW, and became a promotional anthem for VH1. The track was also featured on King Britt’s famed compilation project, This is What Radio Should Sound Like.
Last summer, Michelle’s single “Time†(a collaboration with dance music producers Speakerboxx) reached No. 5 on the Billboard dance music charts and has just recently been nominated for Best Pop Dance Record for the International Dance Music Awards. The single was licensed in 2007 by TLC for the popular show, “Fashionably Late,†starring Stacy London. Her work appears on myriad compilation albums, including OM records Scuba Hidden Treasures, Norman Jay’s Good Times 3, Ministry of Sound’s Chillout Ibiza and Om’s Om Lounge 10.
Most recently Michelle has been working on her forthcoming debut full-length, Sevenly, with producers Alex Elena (producer and co-writer on Alice Smith’s recent Grammy-nominated album on Sony) and Topher Mohr. This summer 2008, Michelle is gearing up to release Sevenly EP, as a preview of what’s to come on the full-length. Michelle’s music recently caught the attention of world-renowned record producer Randy Jackson (of “American Idol†fame,) who approached Michelle about featuring one of her songs on his compilation album. In February 2008 Michelle interviewed and played tracks from the Sevenly EP on Deepak Chopra’s Sirius Satellite radio show when she was a featured musical guest. Michelle regularly performs with her live band in the LA area, and recently showcased her talents before a full-house at two of Hollywood’s premier live music venues, Hotel Café and 86.
Just like Michelle, her sound is wide-ranging and multi-faceted, with influences across the spectrum – she defines the inspired style as “trans-genre.†The end result is, quite simply, a breath of fresh air.
