*WHO IS THIS SKERRIT BWOY THE DJ* .
If you have yet to visit the Bronx, don’t worry because the voice of the Bronx is well on its way. “Short, black, an’ ugly†is how he introduces himself. SKERRIT BWOY a.k.a. MR. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE exploded on the international dancehall scene in 2007, with his sound system GHETTO LIFE. Celebrated for his maniacal, competitive style, and supercharged comical juggling, this likkle bwoy is one of the most loved and feared in the business. "We nah play with people" can be heard spewed throughout rammed dancehalls, accompanied by custom dub plates, 45 LPs, & side-splitting chatter. Many dread their initial meeting of SKERRIT BWOY, while others look forward to his vibrant spirit. Originally from St. Johns, Antigua, the youngster migrated to Bronx, New York in the mid 1990's. Clubbing at a very young age, and hanging out on Creston Avenue, it did not take him long to fit into the fast pace life of the city. "I remember listening to Ricky Trooper on Killaman Jaro sound and saying to myself… Yo! That’s gonna be me! I used to ride my bike to Moodies Records on 225th Street, all the way from 183rd, just to buy 3 records a week…cause those days I was just getting a weekly $10 allowance ". His father Shats Man, pleased with the course his son was taking, encouraged him by purchasing equipment, and dub plates (an exclusive version of a piece of music, usually (re-recorded by a reggae artist for a sound system). In December 2000, the likkle bwoy dem, consisting of SKERRIT BWOY, Robbie Steele and Jr. Dread, reigned supreme in the Bronx Youth Clash. Wining the title, and have continued to prevail ever since. This was only the first of many more trophies that will be placed on the Ghetto Life mantle in years to come.
*WHO IS THIS SKERRIT BWOY THE DANCER*In an era of Dancehall when Passa Passa style dancing had yet to be conceptualized and dancers were not very popular, Skerrit was inspired to begin a career of dancing after viewing a video cassette of one of Jamaica’s many dancehall ops. The video featured a well-known dancer, who went by the name of "Bruck Up". Watching this SKERRIT BWOY began emulating what he saw – learning such dances as the Heel & Toe, Bruck Up’s style of pop-locking, and other various foot movements. Combining these newly learned moves with his speed and agility, SKERRIT BWOY quickly became one of the most popular dancers in the Bronx, often clashing against other crews in school, on the playgrounds, and the infamous Creston avenue house parties, rapidly gaining respect, and forming new allegiances with other local dancers, including "Muppet", "Zima", and Jamaica's own, "Fresh Kids". To this day you can find the Bwoy in any dancehalls, mashing up the dance floor, showcasing his domestic violence style of dancing.
*WHO IS THIS SKERRIT BWOY THE ARTIST*The year 2004 marked the beginning of SKERRIT BWOY, the artist. While working in the studio during a late session, with Bronx artists, "Lady Shanda", "V Dot & Loaded Lucks†from the "Aces Click," the Bwoy accidentally signed his name in the book of ignorance. With 20 minutes of studio time left, what was supposed to be a 45 second commercial, turned into SKERRIT BWOY’s first hit song, with the now immortal "Pum Pum Walk" being recorded that day. Local radio stations quickly took a liking to the song and at first, played it as a joke, but anyone who knows SKERRIT, knows that any publicity, is good publicity. As a result SKERRIT BWOY’s 2004 birthday bash grabbed, and still holds today, the record for THE BIGGEST PARTY EVER IN THE BRONX. Thousands flocked to the venue, Emerald lounge, to celebrate his birthday. "I always had a good name in the Bronx. I was always keeping parties, and they were always well attended, but I was not even close to prepared for what happened at "Pum Pum Walk". Emerald lounge was 10 times bigger than any venue I have promoted previous to 2004 and when I pulled up and saw that crowd, in my head I went yippee!!! Just happy I didn’t flop," jokes Skerrit.
*WHO IS THIS SKERRIT BWOY THE PROMOTER*QUOTE: I THROW PARTIES CAUSE I LOVE TO PARTY. I LOVE TO SEE PEOPLE PARTY. ANYTHING FE DO WITH PARTY CALL ME. WHEN I THROW A PARTY JUS KNOW YOU GONNA HAVE FUN. & IF YOU MISS IT, YOU'LL HEAR YOUR FRENDS TALKING ABOUT IT :END QUOTE
*WHO IS THIS SKERRIT BWOY ENTERTAINER*More recently the young selector has spearheaded GHETTO LIFE sound in to being awarded Star Crew Entertainment: 2005 & 2006 “BRONX SOUND OF THE YEARâ€. After acquiring his green card in 2006, SKERRIT now had bigger dreams for his company. In 2007, playing venues in Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Jamaica, Anguilla, Montserrat, Germany, Canada, and a host of other countries, islands, and cities, has changed this young man’s view on not only entertainment, but on life overall:
Trying to change a person’s, even your brother’s, view about what life can be is an almost impossible task. Now picture trying to change the views of hundreds, or thousands of people you never met in a few hours. That’s my job! I take the people that I deejay, dance, sing, and shed sweat for, out of their every day stress. I want to take dem to a place of bliss, a place of ecstasy. When I entertain, I don’t want no one to think ‘bout their bills, or their job, or their troubles. I’m gonna have you laughing, singing, dancing, and shedding as much sweat as myself. It’s such a good feeling to finish a show, walk outside and here people on their cell phones saying what a good time they’ve had, imitating my moves, or just shaking my hand. It gives me a sense of accomplishment.
This pride for his art is what separates SKERRIT BWOY from anyone else. His vibrant spirit, animation, and interaction are what draw everyone’s attention to this deejay. So much attention, that he has been featured in a wide array of media. Among some of these are: the Japanese video game “SWAGGER†as the main caracter. As a model in the Jamaican Street magazine, Back a Yard (Issue 6). Such DVDs as: Who is Baddest on the Dance Floor: Vol. 1 (Japan), I.R.T. Riddimz (New York), & Lyric DVD Magazine (Canada). Not to mention his personal documentary, “TEMPORARY SANITY†a Dan Brunn film, set for release on Friday, June 29th 2007, at the 10th Annual RAI Film Festival in England. Truly, someone out there is paying attention!Every generation or so, there comes an undeniable talent, that changes the face of entertainment. In my opinion, SKERRIT BWOY is ushering in a dancehall renaissance. Dedicated, talented, original, and unpredictable, and being so young his entertainment roots are surely sprouting for more fertile ground. So what does the future hold for this Bronx entertainer?
The future, asks SKERRIT, I can’t tell the future, homey. I jus wanna play music, and make people have fun. The wilder parties get, the happier I get, cause that means I’m gonna get paid more! What I would like to see most of all is for the police, and the government to stop turning off parties early. 9 times out of 10, a party is the only stress reliever that people have from their every day lives – taking away dancehall from us is like taking away our medication, our therapy. We need that to survive. Other from that, it’s all good. What I would like right now is a real good management team. It’s hard to keep up on all my events, and various promotional activity and appearances while traveling so much. But the one thing I really wanna do before I retire is play Killaman Jaro sound, even jus’ fe one night, if that happens, then I can truly say I have accomplished everything.
