About Me

David Phillips – We Love Resident.Born in Bristol, from 12 years old David spent most of his adolescent years in Marbella, Spain. This place was famous for its nightlife and by the age of 18 David was already helping run a bar with school friends. After a brief spell working back in the UK and travelling he set down in Ibiza, in need of some new scenery and a summer job. It was 1992.He landed a job as barman in one of the the island's main clubs, Space. There he worked for 3 summers. During a winter in Barcelona he teamed up with one of Space..s resident DJ..s, Jeremy Norris, and together they opened Flat Cat, a bar hidden away in a posh area of Barcelona. It became a hangout for Ibiza heads and the city's movers and groovers. They began promoting their own nights in clubs such as Moog, La Via, OnOff, Apolo/Nitsa and were the first to use the venue which now houses one of the city's main clubs; La Terraza. All this time David had one eye on the decks and was getting into some of the fresher genres flying around at the time; The emerging West Coast and Nu Skool breaks scene, Drum & Bass, the whole Wall of Sound Skint - Mo..Wax beats thing.Soon David was back in Ibiza, and no longer a barman by trade. First playing down at Sa Trincha, Salinas Beaches favourite hangout when resident Jonathan was away, then a regular in Pacha's Funky Room and on the roof terrace for Ministry of Sound and Rennaissance. Still keeping his hand in the bar section he was resident down at one of the top bars in Ibiza port, The Rock Bar.1998-2001: After a winter playing at various breakbeat nights in Bristol and London and a spell as resident of the notorious Manumission Motel he was singled out by Danny Whittle (now Pacha director) and We Love boss Darren Hughes who was about to open HOME in London’s Leicester Square. There he was full time resident for two and a half years helping program the line-ups and playing alongside some of the most upfront names in the business. Despite the premature demise of the club, David had gained a wealth of experience living and working in the UK club scene. A regular at The End and Fabric, living and DJing in Brighton and working for Skint records clearing samples. By now he was also playing gigs further afield in the UK and Europe including a full time residency in a new club in Zurich, Q.2002: Still a resident in Pacha..s funky room, The Rock Bar and Manumission, he began a 7 week stint at DC10's all day monday sessions, Circo Loco. Here he could really cut loose, labels of that time like City Rockers coming to the fore meant that he could play sounds seldom playes at that time in Ibiza. We Love Darren Hughes and were onto this and by the end of 2002 they had taken him up again as their new resident. Summer 2003 they booked him for the evening set inside Space every week alongside James Zabeila. The change of sound from these two drew the crowds in as the terrace wound things up outside. The last 5 summers have come and gone and David has rocked Space week in week out, putting together sets of some of the most forward-thinking sounds in the club scene previously overlooked in Ibiza..s sunny environment, yet still capturing the imagination of the die-hard house fans that Ibiza attracts. Nowadays, in the wave of german minimal/electro sounds he is more in his element but still strives to create a sound that is his own, adding a cosmic disco/ italo/ punk funk element to his sets. A classy but eclectic approach to the 4/4 tempo has gained him a reputation as a dj who never fails to surprise crowds with a unique mixture of styles. The last two winters he was based in London, starting as resident of Tim Sheridans new after hours project, Very Very Very Wrong, and Ditched disco at TBar. After another fun filled summer, After another fun-filled summer, David will remain based in Ibiza, now a partner in Lo Cura bar and in December will be embarking on another tour of South America and beyond, flying the We Love flag.
