About Me

In the tradition of Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Dave Matthews, Randy Boen found himself creatively restless. On one hand, he is the lead guitarist, vocalist and principal songwriter for one of the Souths most beloved Jambands, Mile 8. On the other hand, his wide, diverse range of musical influences were manifesting themselves in a batch of songs that didnt quite fit the jazz/funk grooves of Mile 8. The result of this dilemma is Randys brilliant debut solo album, Different AgendaWhile Mile 8s songs are more about the music and the groove, Different Agenda gave Boen a chance to write more substantial lyrics from his heart and gut. These songs had been collecting dust in my head for so long, I started recording some of them in my spare time said Boen. It came far too naturally for me to just put it away and before I knew it, I had an entire album done. It sounded surprisingly downhome. Exploring acoustic based Americana, R+B/Gospel and straight ahead rock and roll was a new experience for Boen but the sessions soon became a labor of love as he called in different musician friends to play and contribute to the songs. The album features appearances from former Allman Brothers Band keyboard master, Johnny Neel, Old Unions Spotty Swertfeger, Mile 8s Russell Wright and Jenny Gill among others. The album was produced by Boen and Chris Tyler.Boen, a Nashville native is a graduate of the highly regarded Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. While long known as one of the most prolific guitarists in Nashvilles burgeoning rock scene, he also plays keys and bass. He serves as the charismatic front man for Mile 8, whose outrageous live shows have made them one of the hottest club acts in the South. Since forming Mile 8 in 1999, Boen has toured all over the world with them having played two tours of military bases that took them to the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Central Africa. They also have appeared at such acclaimed music festivals as Bonnaroo, High Sierra and Harvest Fest. Their first two albums drew rave reviews and their highly anticipated third album will be released later this year, as well as a double-bill DVD, filmed late last year with fellow road warriors, Old Union.Mile 8 is more fun than a barrel of monkeys and I will always play music with them but Im looking forward to getting out and playing these songs, as well. I co-wrote the song, Different Agenda with Johnny Neel. As the album was coming together, it just seemed natural to name the album that since it sums up what these songs mean to me and where I was in my musical life at the moment. I listen to everything and appreciate talent from all genres and these songs are a reflection of that. Who knows what my next songs will sound like. Its constantly changing. They may be totally different, stylistically, from this project. I just hope people see more depth to my songs in this CD. Im fascinated with the craft of songwriting and Im always working to improve and expand my boundaries.Whether hes laying down the funky grooves at the party of the year with Mile 8 or sharing his heart and soul with the songs of Different Agenda, Randy Boen will continue to be a true renaissance man with a spirit that is truly contagious.Currently you can find Randy playing guitar in the newly formed superband 'Johnny Neel and The Criminal Element'.
