The love for music runs deep within me/ Ive been djing for 17 yrs and it all began with my brother (Rick). He introduced 2 / 12inch records singles: "bizarre love triangle" by New Order & "you make me feel so good" by Book of Love. As winter of ' 87 progressed I found myself jamming to the records and digging them big time. They had different rhythm, bass line, keyboards, vocals, and tempo.
The Fade Away/ from listening to heavy metal groups such as: poison, ratt, metallica, motley crue and still one of my fav. bands queensryche, the transition of these groups to: Red Flag, When in Rome, Klf, Depeche mode, New Order, and the Hunger "old school Hunger that is, yes they were Techno before becoming a Rock/Altv. band.
The Great Collection Begins/ @ the time cassette were the thing and of course vinyl, I needed more songs from these artists and there great songs with these nice synthesizers, bass lines, etc. "Cassette's to throw in the air" all over the room.
8th Grade rolls around/ and I found myself becoming "what yall called a New Waver" "Freak" "Punk" or "Just Different". @ this time the only electronic devise I had was a Magnavox boom box with one missing cassette cover "thanks cuz" she broke it off after she stepped on it.......... I ....... was ..... "it's gonna .. be O K".........
OK Im back/Until I found out what I could accomplish with it so I broke the other one off with no hesitation. Having cassette singles from the all & more of the Artist mention above, I started mixing cassettes to cassette "yes cassette to cassette" unlike Dj Kid Capre /NYC who started mixing with 8 tracks! my hat off to you bro.
Real Mix Shows/ I would listen to local talent on the radio waves, @ the time I would never miss a show called Dave's House Party on 95.1 with Dj Joseph Friar later it would change to KVIC House Party "Thanks Joseph for the replies and shout outs, your friend / Yd." Another show I would catch was Club 95 with Dj NR Jenz and Phillip and Hosting Rene the Weekend Warrior. "Thanks to the 95 crew for the hook ups, shout outs, and what ever else I forgot to mention. Three DJs that had other live shows were Mike Castillo from West L.A. Dj XTC from Cocktails, & Dj Sean Smith from The Great Escape . "All these shows were really pure"
My brother's friend Technic Ted/ had the first Dj set up I had ever laid my eyes on, it was a nice set up: 2 /1200 technics & the Technics first Cd mixer "sweet". It would be here at ted's house were my brother taught me the technics of mixing and the love of turntablism. I started saving my lunch money to score 12 inch records on the weekend from stores such as: Record Bar, Sound Warehouse, Musicland, Criags Record Factory, Eclipse records, Oaklawn records, Hogwild, Autobahn records, and HEB, that's right they use to carry vinyl.
Countless of mixed tapes/ my brother and I were making @ technic teds house, until my mother and father bought us our own mixing board and turntable, we could only afford 1 technics 1200 and on the other side we were using my dad's stereo which had 8 track player, cassette, & turntable platter, the turntable model .. was called ST26J it was awesome ! thanks a Brady ST26J for all the great yrs.
The night life / was an awesome sight to see when your only 14 yrs old, entering all these nightclubs and seeing all these people loving the dance music the Dj was throwing down. Making friends with the Dj's from the radio shows and the nightclubs was also great feeling, they used to ask me to work the light show and other equipment when they had like a dance contest, I would work the music and lights while they took a break.
House Party! / Every other weekend, up and down the coastal bend my brother and I would attend & eventually having our own here & there with some of the Dj's from the radio shows and nightclubs, they would drive in and be Guest Dj's.
Practice makes Prefect / As high school rolled around I would stay home practicing my skills and be saving my money to purchase records for the weekend. My big debut came the summer of ' 93 in front of hundreds of people @ my 1st rave Called: Apocalypses Rave @ club NRG in C.C. TX Krusaders Of Kaos XTC: (c.c. tx), ED CORTEZ (kingsville, tx) YOUNG DAVE (alice,tx) "it was one of the best feelings I had ever felt" just seeing hundreds of people dancing to music I was spinning'.
Friends will dance / when they visit the club your spinning @ and be great support where ever you go to spin that night. Having friends into dance music was a lot of fun; I would talk to a friend of mine by the name of Bobby Boss because he was a great supporter of techno and dance music. With him having a radio show he decided to do a mix show like 3 hrs long on Saturday nights on 105.9. We continued with the Sat night club zone for 1 yr. Thanks bobby boss for the air time, keep up the good sound. In 1999 URB magazine had there first annual mixtape contest and I made runner-up in the dance category. To be mention in a world wide mag is an awesome feeling. URB Magazine/June issue vol.9 number 65.
Countless tapes turn into / Countless Cd's with a C D burner. It is something else when you make a cd in digital and compile a cd to hear @ work or in the car cd player. My friend AJ and Thomas introduce me into some software on making & producing beats on the computer and other systems. I got into making beats for myself and sampling old records with new sounds from the software introduced. I've but together some remixes of songs and even finished 10 tracks and named it my first album called "treasured moments" in 2001. Now today with even more technology and more software, I am finished with my 2nd album, about 100% done and it promises to be more versatile and more vocals, maybe even from me" we will see. hahahaa
I am so ready / for the next step in this music, Djing, business. Rick and I have our own self employment business called House Crew Production, & what makes you think you sound good Records, & I have branched off and made my 12 X 12 studios, locally. I thank God for giving me so much talent & awareness.
Thanks for all your support and "Play it Loud"
