J. Spake

Producer for MJG Muzik

About Me

John Spake grew into a hip hop producer with heavy roots in jazz and R & B. His father, saxophonist Jim Spake of Memphis, TN, raised him around music from a very early age, both in the studio and venue. John, too, played sax until he began college at the University of Tennessee in the fall of 2001. His production career began with his acquisition of an MPC 2000XL, which is his mainstay to this day. He's currently working with MJG's (of 8 Ball & MJG fame) label in Memphis, while being based out of Knoxville. His future plans are to move back to Memphis and to continue to traverse the production fame ladder. His usage of sampling has been his biggest feature thus far, integrating all types of music into his tracks. He's used everything from Motown to Phillip Glass to German 70s experimental rockers, Popal Vuh.
