By the time she was 17 and spotted by a major record label executive while working as a singing waitress in a London restaurant, Jem was a seasoned veteran. The executive was blown away and offered her a record deal. However, instinctively knowing what the label had in mind was not her vision of the artist she wanted to be, she turned down the offer.The next four years were spent performing at scores of songwriter nights at venues in and around London and Newcastle (where she attended college).
