About Me
Give dayinthelife...'s self-titled debut album, a spin and the musical wealth that they have to offer becomes perfectly clear. With songs that are both hard and multi-dimensional, this album has an uncompromising sound that defies comparison
Lead vocalists George Reynolds and Josh DeMarco both spent time in the seminal hard-core band Mind Over Matter- where George was a founding member. The group earned itself a nice buzz in the NYC hard core scene before breaking up a couple years back. The two decided to carry on, form a new band and take the music in different direction from the Mind Over Matter sound. Combing their influences (ranging from straight hard core to industrial and metal) they started writing and getting the band together. Drummer John Kamoosi was a friend of Josh's from way back, and guitarist Blunt and bassist Kris Fleischmann were acquaintances from the local NYC hard scene.
dayinthelife... started playing the clubs and eventually caught the eye seminal hard core producer producer Don Fury. Impressed by the band’s performance Fury signed the band to a production deal and brought them to TVT. Working with Fury in his SoHo studio (the same place where he produced the likes of CIV and Quicksand), helped accelerate the young band's growth. The vocal interlacing between George and Josh got stronger, and their sound forged ahead into formerly unknown terrain.
Opening with the dynamic, textural Sign of the Times, it veers into the untamed mayhem of Self-Serve adventuresome aural terrain of Open Wide and tense beauty of See You on the Way." Intriguing guitar licks accent tribal rhythms, and the vocal interplay of George Reynolds and DeMarco on tunes such as Chameleon and Ceremony of the New Empire further enhance dayinthelife…'s complexity.
Although dayinthelife... practice the kind of unity professed by mid-eighties hardcore, dayinthelife... has created a more earthy, primal attitude. Says Josh, "The tribalism, and what we're expressing in the lyrics, is an open invitation for everyone to join in."
With "dayinthelife...," you've just gotten your call. The seeds of New York's dayinthelife? were planted in the now-defunct N.Y. hardcore band Mind Over Matter. The band released two independent albums (and toured both the U.S. and Europe), and it was in that group that singer George Reynolds and singer/guitarist Josh DeMarco first collaborated. When the group splintered, Reynolds and DeMarco set out to form a new band that embraced other kinds of music (including alternative, heavy metal, hardcore, psychedelia, etc.). They also wanted to concentrate on developing their original two-singer attack over a wall of dense guitar riffing. The rest of the band (bassist Kris Fleischmann, guitarist Blunt, and drummer John Kamoosi) came together quickly, since they were already friends and played in rival bands from the Long Island, NY area. After catching the ear of producer/Building Records president Don Fury (Quicksand, CIV), the group was signed on the strength of their live show and unique sound. The band released their self-titled debut in the autumn of 1997. ~ Greg Prato, All Music GuideWhat sets the self-titled debut from dayinthelife? apart from their fellow hardcore/metal peers is their desire to spike their songs with other musical forms. "Rise" contains a Middle Eastern guitar motif, while "See You On the Way" has a spacy, atmospheric Smashing Pumpkins aura about it (with all of the tracks containing dense riffing a la Quicksand). The group has a pair of strong lead vocalists: George Reynolds, who sounds like a higher-pitched Henry Rollins, and Josh DeMarco, who sings more conventionally and melodically. Lyrically, the band escapes from the hardcore-cliché ghetto with often positive lyrics that deal with attaining goals, corporate America, etc. For those who want their alterna-metal with some depth and originality, dayinthelife? is a good bet...........MOVIE SOUNDTRACKSSoundtracks for Modern Vampires (1998) TV
