About Me

Lee Sappho was never an ordinary kid. She knew at a very early age that music was and would always be her passion. Glued often to the kitchen radio, Lee would loudly sing along with her favourites tunes of the time - Patsy Cline, Connie Francis and Helen Shapiro, or would happily belt out a few number for her family on road trips. And nothing was sacred! Any song would do from 'A Doggy Stole a Sausage' to 'Click Go The Shears' to 'West of the Wall' to 'Doh a Dear'. Lee worked hard and saved her pocket money of 40c per week as a 12 year old and bought her first investment - a portable record player - for $20, and she still has her first records - 'Hey Jude' by the Beatles and 'Jake the Peg' by Rolf Harris.....perhaps testament to her already broad taste in music! But life had other ideas and lessons for our girl before music was to become her profession. A traumatic family life meant that Lee would spend a great deal of her growing and developing years being passed between relatives - namely her Grandparents and her Auntie's homes, with some time spent with her feuding parents in between. Nothing was going to be handed to this girl on a silver platter, and with time this became more and more evident. However, there is nothing like a bit of strife to spur some people on, and this is exactly how things have panned out for Ms. Saff. By the age of 32, when she had had two 'beautiful kids' by two different and perhaps not so beautiful fathers Lee decided that she had spent enough time being the strength behind her men's dreams and wishes and decided it was time to get on with her own dreams.....before it was all too late. In fact Lee has always commended her first (and only - to date!) husband with teaching her about the blues.....in more ways than one! Now, some time later - having bought her first home in Fremantle (Western Australia) - after yet another failed relationship Lee decided it was time to strike a blow - or not at all! Not knowing where to start Lee sought the professional help and advice of then local singing teacher Cathy Hole who's love, support and encouragement propelled Lee on to have the faith and belief in herself as a singer who COULD do it, and what's more - SHOULD do it! This combined with the school of hard knocks - which had given Lee the kind of credibility all blues singers most often seems to have graduated from meant that the rest - as THEY say was history......Within two years of her first singing 'lesson' which was more about confidence building than anything, Lee was already heading her own power house blues band - 'LEE SAPPHO and the BODY and FENDER BAND' rocking houses right across the state and eventually the country. Her passion for the blues did not stop there either. In her 'spare' time Lee worked on RTRFM's 'Spoonful of Blues' for over 5 years, and was a regular guest on ABC radio. Lee's rise to success was also topic of the wonderfully acclaimed Deckchair Theatre play 'Sappho Sings the Blues' a one hander play in which Lee performed, and for which she is remembered reguarly by members of the public who were captivated by her performance, and by the sweet sad story of her life.....thus far!Other noteable performances included numerous appearances at Blues at Bridgetown, the Telstra Adelaide Festival 2000 before over 5,000 screaming fans, Television and live to air radio shows. A personal request by Internationally acclaimed blues guitarist Dave Hole for Lee to guest with him at the launch of his CD 'Ticket to Chicago' at Metro's City was a blast enough, but when he also asked to perform one of Lee's original numbers with her....well it doesn't get any better than that, and still has her grinning!Lee's award winning 1996 CD 'Big Girls Blues' (with 12 original tracks) is still a hot seller and the pressure is on more than ever for her to release more of her unique hilariously funny/sad/poigant blues.Lee Sappho has been held responsible for causing break-up's and making baby's all in one show....and in true blues form is notorious for calling a spade a shovel! Her performances are infectious, funny, inclusive and you can't help but walk away with a spring in your step and the feeling that life is pretty damn good - no matter who or what you are!Lee Sappho is the 6 foot (180cm) belter in the 'fishtail' gown, she's the tatooed Momma everyone wants to love and take home to meet their Momma....(or that's what they tell her any way!) She's sold more CD's to daughter's for their Mother's, and more CD's to Mother's for their daughter's....and to men for their wives(!) than seems possible..... and it seems EVERYONE wants to spread the good word(s) and the downright funny words that this woman has to say.So waddayathink? Are you brave enough to take on this woman who really, really knows the world and all it's woes, and absolutely LOVES life anyway???! You bet you are!Resistance is futile. Myspace Contact Tables
