Kidnappers strike again in Iraq
(Jun 08, 2007) A Baghdad priest and five children were kidnapped Wednesday, June 6, amid increasing signs of a collapse in security for Christians in many parts of Iraq.
Fr. Hanni Abdel Ahad, who is in his 30s, was seized his Church of the Divine Wisdom in the Suleikh district of north-east Baghdad. Early reports reaching Aid to the Church in Need (ACN), indicated that the youth kidnapped with him were young boys who had joined Fr. Ahad on a visit to the city's minor seminary. The news comes as Christians in Iraq enter what is almost certainly their bleakest period of modern times. Last month's kidnapping of Baghdadi priest Fr. Nawzat Hanna, 38, was widely seen as the latest in a series of scare tactics by militant Muslims determined to bring about forced conversions. Fr Hanna was released within a few days.Iraq's Christian community, which is rapidly dwindling in number, is still reeling from the murder on Sunday, June 3, of Fr. Ragheed Aziz Ganni, 34, and three sub-deacons, killed shortly after Mass outside their Church of the Holy Spirit in Mosul, in the north of the country. The funeral service on Monday, June 4, in Fr. Ganni's home-town of Kararmless, not far from Mosul, was repeatedly interrupted as grieving friends and relatives struggled to control their emotions.
Fr. Ragheed Aziz Ganni^Today's kidnapping will only heighten fears about the long-term survival of Iraq's Christian community, which until 2003 totaled 1.2 million. Baghdad, until recently home to a large proportion of Christians, has become "hell" according to Auxiliary Bishop Shlemon Warduni speaking to ACN last week. Christians face eviction from their homes for refusing to convert to Islam. One Islamic 'mullah' leader recently declared that Christian buildings were now the rightful property of Muslims. Meanwhile, Shia firebrand Muqtada al-Sadr has warned of "grave consequences" for Baghdadi Christians who fail to wear the veil required by Islamic hardliners.ACN has repeatedly reassured bishops and other clergy that it will continue its emergency work for Iraqi Christians, including support for refugees pouring into Turkey, Jordan and Syria as well as help for homeless faithful in Baghdad. ACN International President Hans-Peter Rothlin also issued a prayer appeal for Iraq on Friday, June 1, stating, "We pray that the God of mercy and compassion may come to the aid [of the Christians of Iraq].""We pray that out of the ashes of despair, hope may spring up anew."ACN is currently running a Middle East appeal.
