Rural Rock & Roll

My all-time favorite punk scene ever...

About Me

"Rural Rock & Roll" is an hour-long documentary (which also serves as a "pilot" for a potential ongoing series) focusing on the fabulous music scene of Eureka/Humboldt County, CA. The idea behind "Rural Rock" (were it to become a show) is to travel across the country to assorted small college/art towns to see what the rural punk rockers are up to and meet the interesting characters making and fascilitating original music in those towns. In short, "RRR" celebrates the musicians and scenesters you've never heard of and probably never will hear of otherwise...................... This documentary features a week in the life of some great underground bands from a growingly-appreciated music scene in Humboldt County, CA (six hours north of S.F.). The movie also serves indirectly as a scathing indictment on a music business that pretty much ignores small towns (or at least, for inexplicable reasons, all but requires rural musicians to move to one of about five big cities, if they want to make a decent living), which is a shame, because oftentimes making music out in the sticks provides a unique and untarnished rock perspective. Indeed, some of the best bands these days come and go, often unnoticed, in rural towns. If you ask me, the frontier and the frontline of rock and roll is taking place in the garages and basements of the rural punk rockers....................... "Rural Rock & Roll" bands include...Buffy Swayze, Candy Muscle, Dragged by Horses, Eureka Garbage Co., J.P.G., Lowlights, Que la Chinga, Trash & Roll, The Blue Dot, The Great Salvation, The Hitch, The Ian Fays, The Monster Women, The Ravens, The Smashed Glass................................ My Interests

Interested in the grass-roots, do-it-yourself music/video underground aesthetic. Homemade rock and roll. Rock and roll lore. The vast wasteland/ghost town of unknown genius bands and fascinating rock and roll stories that have existed in the past, that exist now, and that will continue to exist anonymously in the future.

I'd like to meet:

I'd like to meet unknown rural punk rockers all over the U.S. of A. and beyond. Here's Act One (the first 9 minutes) of "Rural Rock & Roll" (broadcast on youtube)...

Music:

Buffy Swayze, Candy Muscle, Dragged by Horses, Eureka Garbage Co., J.P.G., Lowlights, Que la Chinga, Trash & Roll, The Blue Dot, The Great Salvation, The Hitch, The Ian Fays, The Monster Women, The Ravens, The Smashed Glass, The Broken Hearts. And all the local bands from the past that inspired this documentary: Puddletown Tom, The Cutters, The Sin Men, The Foster Kids, Audio Wreck, Hadie's Drug Gun, Crimewave!, Mexico, Laxton's Superb, The Letdowns, Automatic Pink, Drown 11, H.O.M.O., Fearless, The Hideous, Relapse, Jacoby Whorehouse, etc., to name a few...

Movies:

Of course, this movie, "Rural Rock and Roll," is the one we're touting here, but a shout out goes out to some movies that influenced "RRR"...Gimme Shelter, The Fuse!, Watch Me Jumpstart, Woodstock, Fearless Freaks, Heavy Metal Parking Lot, Neil Diamond Parking Lot, Orick, CA, U.S.A., Steve and Jensen's Universe, In Search of the Famous Hoosier Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwich, The Ugliest Fountain in the World (Without a Doubt), to name a few.

Television:

"Rural Rock and Roll" will hopefully be a show on television soon. It's gonna knock music television on it's ass. Imagine tuning in each week to see what people are up to in Athens, GA or Boise, ID or Lexington, KY or Lawrence, KS or Lacrosse, WI or even far off towns in Canada or Mexico. If we can get this god-damned show green lit, it's gonna be badass. And that's a guarantee straight from the mouth of Johnny Render.

Books:

__________

Heroes:

Robert Pollard, Wayne Coyne (two rural rockers) and Jesse Pearson and all the other participants of "RRR."
