About Me

The average world citizen owns 75 Legos. In this, and likely many other respects, I am woefully below average.

My Interests

philosophy, knitting, TV shows on DVD, whiskey, southern vernacular, reading the Sunday Times in bed, Kansas basketball, gravel roads, the complexities of language, pencils, beer with friends, friends with beer, This American Life, my new bike, the Harpers Index, the smell of tomatoes on the vine, brains, leaves changing colors in the fall, and ice cream.

I'd like to meet:

A man who can core a cauliflower with his bare hands.

Music:

I'm told I have a penchant for the sad bastards. The grim reapers and grand weepers, as Tom Waits would say. But I've also been known to boogie. If it's got a good beat, I'm your Huckleberry.

Movies:

The aesthetic of Almodovar; the humor of Christopher Guest and Co; the philosophical playfulness of Charlie Kaufman; and the honesty of Noah Baumbach.

Television:

on DVD, of course: Arrested Development, Chappelle Show, Da Ali G Show, West Wing, Sports Night, House, The Simpsons, Strangers with Candy, Mr. Show.

Books:

Favorite authors: Annie Dillard, Milan Kundera, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Marilynn Robinson, Richard Russo, Philip Roth and Richard Ford.

Heroes:

I admire comedic brilliance. Dave Chappelle, the writers of The Onion, Christopher Guest, David Sedaris, Sarah Vowell, David Cross. John Stewart and Stephen Colbert have their moments. But I am deeply suspicious of (and perturbed by) those who try to analyze the nature of humor; just laugh.

My Blog

When it comes to relationships...

...I don't date Existentialists. Allow me to explain. First, my appeal to that overdone (and icky even before it was overdone) Sex and the City clause, is intentional. I spent the holiday lull between...

Even Santa vacations in Branson

How to make the perfect Hot Toddy

I've been sick for a week, so I've had plenty of practice. A night of sweet oblivion in four simple steps: 1) Makers Mark Whiskey; the best whiskey ever. Opening that waxy, red top will get ya every ...

Hell, personalized

I've never been the type to go in for grand explanations. The devil's usually in the details, and the true story is usually boring. I find great comfort in this [perhaps this is why I'm a philosopher]...

PT Loser

I confess: I drive a PT Cruiser. But before you rush to judgment, you must understand that I cannot do otherwise. I'm not appealing to my lack of free will, or to the causal closure of the physical wo...

What kind of person buys insurance while playing a board game?

A damn good question, Nate. A damn good question. Last night some of my dear friends gathered for dinner to celebrate the fact that I am aging. To keep it from feeling too much like an adult function,...

I'm Sarah Robins and I approved this duvet cover

If there's one thing the members of my family have in common, it's that we can't keep our mouths shut when we've just bought you something, especially if it's for a birthday/holiday. [So you should kn...

About my poker face...

...I don't have one. I played poker with friends last night and learned that I 'show my cards' way too easily. I love to play, but in the end I'm always out for more than I'd planned on.Turns out, I'm...

Please Hammer, don't hurt 'em

It's amazing how the simple act of buying beer and cleaning supplies at the grocery store on a Friday evening can really make you feel like a loser. Luckily, those moments can be compensated for by a ...
