Heart Attack
.."There are moments in every artist’s recording career when their artistry reaches a new level. A Fiction is such an album. After two acclaimed albums, Elin Ruth Sigvardsson joins the heavyweights. With natural authority she stretches out on something that can almost be described as a concept album about relationships – to a partner, to the world, and to oneself. Melodically, it’s more pop than singer/songwriter or country. The lyrics reach under your skin and the arrangements sparkle with creativity. Together with producer Rolf Klint, Elin has hand-picked vintage gear and instruments that create a rich soundscape, where harshness and beauty meet. In addition to Elin and Rolf, the core musicians have been Johan Eckeborn and Calle Ekerstam, who have created a symbiosis, sometimes by switching instruments with each other when needed. A few additional musicians can also be heard on the album. The songs take the listener on a musical and lyrical journey with a beginning, a middle and an end. How You Dug Your Own Grave – the album’s first single – sums up the content. Saviour is a duet with swedish singer Magnus Carlson from the band Weeping Willows. As a whole, the songs describe a way out – out of your own troubles, as well as out of a destructive relationship.Along the way there’s dark humor, anger, resignation and hope, before the album ends with the epic, suggestive Little Man.Throughout the album, Elin’s vocals cover different expressions and temperaments.
â€I’ve found the courage to expose more different sides of myself, and there was room for them on this album. Some songs are immediate, others more suggestiveâ€.As a songwriter, Elin has approached the songwriting process in new ways. Instead of beginning with writing on the guitar, she has sometimes built the songs from a drum loop and/or a vocal, which has created a new freedom. Sometimes she has written complete songs with no instruments around. â€To The Good Times was created in my head while I was having coffee with a some friends. I wrote it down, rushed home and recorded the songâ€. And that is the version that ended up on the album.A lot of people look at pop music as something disposable. A Fiction is likely to stand the test of time."BACKGROUND: Elin Ruth Sigvardsson is 26 years old. Her country rock-tinged debut album Saturday Light Naive (2003) was produced by Lasse Winnerbäck, one of Swedens biggest rock artists. Critics and audience alike agreed that the young singer, guitarist and songwriter Elin had emerged a fully-formed artist. The debut album spawned four nationwide radio hits, two Swedish Grammy nominations, two Rockbjörnen nominations, a P3 Guld-nomination, great sales, great reviews and a prize for Newcomer Of the Year by The Swedish Music Publishers Association.
The follow-up, Smithereens, was recorded during a short but intense period and went straight to number one in the Swedish album sales chart. However, it didn’t get quite the same media coverage as her debut album, something which Elin today sees as a good thing, since it prevented her from stagnating (the most common biproduct of success). Smithereens was also released in Britain, where she spent a lot of time touring.
Then followed an extended period where she didn’t write at all. However, life soon saw to it that there was a lot to write about, resulting in a period of intense creativity.
â€The concept of writer’s block doesn’t scare meâ€, she notes. â€I’ve learnt to trust that my urge to write always returnsâ€..
