Why did the band change its name?
The Mongols disbanded in early May 2005 due to legal
reasons and after charter member Jerome Velasco amicably
left to pursue a career in sound engineering. Aw month after
being apart, the remaining members decided to form a new
band. PUPIL was born.
What’s the origin of the band’s name?
How do bands come up with their names? Most likely it’s a case
of what’s the coolest sounding word? In PUPIL’s case, the choice
was narrowed down to a single-word name, preferably short, simple yet elegant, technical but familiar, should sound more like an electronic band than a rock band, and, probably the most
important, easy to say/spell/shout/scream. Early candidates
were: Narcom, Tyrel Corp, Traitors, The Gets, Villain, Lords
of Nasdaq, and Trochlear.
Which of the two possible meanings
of the word pupil does the band endorse?
It’s split. Ely chanced upon the name while reading a medical book, and he liked the fact that pupil was the part of the eye where the light comes in. Yan likes the eternal learning connotations of the name.
