About Me

first off, if you want the blogging, you should go here: http://roadtoad.livejournal.com
Alright, now I guess I can talk about myself. I'm just some dude from a weird family who tried going to college, failed, met a girl, got a "real" job, and settled into the American Bad Dream: wife, mortgage, 9to5, TV, bad food, mediocre sex, and general apathy as we marched ploddingly toward our graves one day at a time. That was St. Louis, 1991-2005. What I wouldn't do to have that time back.
Ah well, time only moves one way, or at least we only perceive it one way (most of us), so I just move forward. Can't change the past, but I can change the Scott. The Worst Thing That Ever Happened To Me slowly morphed into the Best Thing. Over 2006, we got divorced, I made new friends, I gave up meat and television, lost my crap job, and decided it was high time to stop being the smartest guy everyone knew who didn't have his degree.
Now I am an old-ass freshman at the University of Arizona, studying Linguistics and Creative Writing, and hoping to one day pay the bills by writing things that people like to read.

I'd like to meet:

okay, I will be less glib and actually answer the question...

I like to meet people who are:

- crazy hippie vegetarian freakos
- pink-haired bisexuals
- direct, even to a fault
- able to hold a good conversation, even if it means pausing the movie or actually (shock!) turning off the TV
- writers
- avid readers
- poets (who are also writers, but they get their own line anyway... deal)
- geeks
- gamers, not "players"
- not at the extremes of gender identification. I like the middle ground; it's far more interesting.
- honest, with themselves as much as with others
- people I like (catch-all cop out answer for the stuff I missed)

I like the quotes section on Facebook, but Myspace doesn't have one, so I'm making my own.
Favorite Quotes:

"Please, God, make me a stone."
-- 'River Tam', Serenity

"No power in the 'verse can stop me."
-- 'River Tam', Firefly

"You forget the things you were certain you would always remember, especially the tiny things, and all too often they're the things that matter."
-- Neil Gaiman, blog entry, 12/1/06

"I'm your huckleberry."
-- 'Doc Holliday', Tombstone

"Why do you wear that stupid bunny suit?"
"Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?"
-- 'Donnie' and 'Frank', Donnie Darko

"A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having!"
-- 'V', V for Vendetta

"Slide."
-- 'Penguin/Marla', Fight Club

"It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything."
-- 'Tyler Durden', Fight Club

"Human beings, almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so."
-- Douglas Adams, "Last Chance to See"

"Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it?
"It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up.
"You build up all these defenses: you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life. You give them a piece of you.
"They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore.
"Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness. So a simple phrase like 'maybe we should just be friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart.
"It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain.
"I hate love."
-- 'Rose Walker', Sandman "The Kindly Ones" by Neil Gaiman

and the Mark Twain collection:
"[T]hat day will never come when facts and experience can teach a pulpit anything useful."

"I haven't a particle of confidence in a man who has no redeeming petty vices."

"Of the demonstrably wise there are but two: those who commit suicide, and those who keep their reasoning faculties atrophied with drink."

"[T]he citizen who thinks he sees that the commonwealth's political clothes are worn out, and yet holds his peace and does not agitate for a new suit, is disloyal; he is a traitor."

"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to reform (or pause and reflect)."

"To be a patriot, one had to say, and keep on saying, 'Our country, right or wrong,' and urge on the little war. Have you not perceived that that phrase is an insult to the nation?"

And the Video...

New video to celebrate the "fucking" awesomeness that is The Big Lebowski.

meh. I don't even have a TV, but I do like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. I have also been known to like The Simpsons, The Daily Show, South Park, and The Colbert Report. Apparently, you have to be animated, cynical, and/or Joss Whedon to interest me.

Heroes:

Mark Twain, Jim Morrison, Jack Kerouac, Suzi Twitty, Neil Gaiman, Bill Clinton, John Lennon, your mom
