Originally out of Anaheim, 26 year-old Dj Winner started as a promoter with Dj Pat (Ghetto Monkeys, SF) and Ashley McNally (Premonition). The trio started organizing house parties in the college residential area of Isla Vista when the house music scene was in its larva stage, expanding quickly to the local mountains with the now-historic For the People gatherings.
Winner started DJing in early 1998, playing at the underground parties he was promoting. Influenced by such notables as Gene Farris, DJ Sneak and Dj Pat himself, Winner developed a unique style of progressive funky house. He went on to his first residency with the birth of Santa Barbara’s original downtown house club promotion, the Zoo. Created by Patrick Sullivan (Dj Pat) in early 1999, the Zoo made its mark attracting the biggest names in the global house scene, while being energized by a core group of local residents, of which Winner was an original member. Charles Feelgood, Donald Glaude, DJ Dan and Terry Mullan were among the list of world-class DJs that made the Zoo a favorite spot for house music aficionados.
In addition to his residency at the Zoo, Winner started his own house night at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa called CitiSoundz which featured a different artist from a different city each night including the likes of SF’s Jeno, LA’s Eddie Amador and Chicago’s DJ Colette. With his residency at Citisoundz, Winner also began playing parties for Christopher Dixon’s Therapy Productions in Santa Barbara. He soon became a resident and has been holding it down ever since for the preeminent party crew.
While Winner’s style has changed slightly over the years, it has always embraced a funky sound. Now a more blended sound of hip-hop, funky house and rock, his eclectic style keeps him in high demand as he has played with an endless array of world -renowned djs from San Fransisco to New York. He currently has weekly residencies at Tonic and Eos in Santa Barbara.
