Born on mothers day May 14, 1978, also the birth year of hip-hop, Rupert Alexis Cooper, a.k.a. Lex Coop a.k.a. Da Grinch was born in Flatbush Brooklyn, NY. He was the product of a mother from Honduras and a father from Trinidad. Lex was raised by his mother who worked a 9 to 5 at Dr. Davidson PH.D office where Afini Shakur used to take the late great Tupac Shakur. His mother sometimes had to take the then 2 year old Lex to work with her. Tupac was age 9; safe to say it was then where Lex got his very first connection with one of his eras most powerful voices.It was there in NY where he was introduced to music at the age of 3 when his mother use to take him to live concerts such as Sugar Hill Gang, Alice Cooper, Steel Pulse, Third World, The OJays, Eddie Kendricks, Peter Tosh, and Nina Simone. However it was at the ripe age of 10 where his exposure to some of the legends like LL Cool J, Run DMC, and Kool G Rap really fueled his drive to rap; with songs like Runs House and Rock the Bells contributing to the development of his craft.Hailing from Warner Robins, (WARTOWN) GA, Da Grinch, an alias of Lex, owed this name to the thought of being an outsider who gets no love for being real. Being real is the only way to describe his music. Lex Coop has a forward approach on debatable topics such as hypocrisy within society, ignorance, and recreational drug use.At age 13 Lex Coop started rapping, by 15 he had been exposed to the underworld of battling. Battling is how he began to grow as an emcee. He owes battling to the evolving of his abrasive style and ability to think quickly on your toes. He however does not consider himself a battle rapper he considers himself a spitter. The difference he explains as A battle rapper might want to rap about obvious things like outward appearance and punch lines.a spitter focuses on delivery, word play, and lyricism.
When asked if he considered himself a lyricist or an emcee, he answered, Both, because with my lyricism I will be the master of the ceremony.Lex Coop first project was a mix-tape in 2000, entitled RIPPIN and RUNNIN, released in the War Town. That was then followed by Lex Coop DA GRINCH in 2002, and his most recent mix-tape, HOODLAND which is a group Lex formed with another aspiring artist Luck Charmz in 2005. When asked who some of his inspirations are when he writes he said Biggie, Redman, and Outkast. Currently Lex Coop is working on the HOODLAND Album GOOD N DA HOOD and DA GRINCH, NTENT2DISTRIBUTE, mix-tape which will be dropping in late summer early fall 2006.
