The MOODS

Alterno-pop indie-rock troubadours!

About Me

Thanks for visiting The MOODS' MySpace profile!
The MOODS take the fundamental pop dynamic, strongly influenced by the British Invasion of the 1960s, and layer in a variety of instruments, bringing their sound to a more symphonic level. Imagine an upbeat, pop-driven version of Belle & Sebastian with a hint of a modernized Buddy Holly. Their songs delve into the deep waters of incisive political and social commentary, and resurface to universal themes of love and heartache.
Frontman Jay Africa sets the foundation with his rhythm guitar lines, adding a second guitar (Brian Johnson) in counterpoint, and a rocksteady bass (Eric Carter) and drumline (Mark Adams) which create the backbone of the band. Heidi Kush’s playful piano and elegant violin lines add movement and complexity, while the electronic facet of the synth (Erin Africa) creates a modern texture. Five-part vocal harmonies complete the richness that defines The MOODS.
The band is in the process of producing its debut album and planning a West Coast Tour to coincide with the album's 2008 release.

Influences: The band is a product of many influences - some of which are The Beatles, Belle & Sebastian, Better Than Ezra, Camera Obscura, The Decemberists, Ani DiFranco, The Dresden Dolls, Green Day, The Mr. T Experience, The New Pornographers, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Shins, Simon & Garfunkle, and Talking Heads.

Sounds Like: After a good 6 months of bandhood, someone was finally so inspired to tell us who we sound like! According to her we sound like "the Violent Femmes w/ a dash of Bright Eyes." We like the comparison very much - thanks, Jean!

We've also been told by one gentleman that we sound like "Death Cab [for Cutie] and Ween". Another remarked that we sounded like Barenaked Ladies. A very fine San Diego band called The Modlins reinforced that comparison, adding that we also have a quality like that of "[The] New Pornographers, minus the distortion."

Most recently, after a particularly rockin' set in the SFV, cutie extraordinaire Clare said that we had a Counting Crows feel. Thanks lots, everyone! We must be doing something right.

If you, dear reader, find yourself so inspired to make a comparison yourself, send us a message...
