About Me

Birmingham J

Add to My Profile | More VideosWith a name like Birmingham J, how do you get past the stigma of being a "local" rapper? Easy. "Havent you heard of Memphis Bleek?" he laughs. "If youre good, youll shine anyway. I want people to know where Im from. People think [Birmingham] is country, backwoods, dirt streets. Its not really like that here. Im just bringing forth my part of the South that hasnt been heard yet. I want to do what Outkast did for Atlanta."
Although some have compared him to Ludacris, his style and attitude is unique. While many rappers brag about their years in the drug game, Birmingham is proud of his day job, but doesnt allow it to interfere with his true love. "The music thing is my life. I write a lot of lyrics at work, and when I get home, I match it to the beat. I been doing that for the longest, seven years at least."
At one point in his career, he had a conversation with an A&R from Columbia Records who changed his outlook on the game. "He was like, Man, people really aint gonna give you no real money [to sign]. You might get 300k-400k, but you really aint gonna end up with much. They aint givin out deals like they was. With the money I make at my job, it aint worth it to quit for no 80k. That aint no real money."
The label exec advised him to build up his spins and sales locally to make the labels come to him. "Everybody thats got a lot of money from the game already had their city popping and their state popping, so they deserve those millions because of the work they put in before they signed. Thats what Im striving for," he says. With that in mind, he teamed up with Kottage Boy Entertainment, which also owns a chain of music stores throughout Alabama needless to say, a good asset to have if youre trying to break a new artist. Birmingham Js figured out the game, and hes got the skills to back it up. OzoneMag.com
