About Me

If I counted the number of times I've lost my concentration at work and found myself staring at my in-tray, keyboard, elbow etc, I'd probably get distracted and lose count. During those times, I've been wondering about what I could or should be doing somewhere else, perhaps trying to make more of a difference to something. In particular, I'd like to do something for the environment. What this might be exactly, I'm not sure yet, but I've recently sent many a wordy email to many an unsuspecting academic or other involved person to find out more, and some ideas are starting to take shape. That's right, big shape.

My Interests

Music, I'm having a real blast playing drums for All Hail the Underdog here in Bristol (myspace.com/allhailtheunderdog), bass, guitar, languages, travel, art, photography, inline ramp skating (if I can find my cojones again), frisbee, basketball, tai chi, the environment, nature, current affairs (although I'm completely fed up with all of the news channels and will only read the Guardian or Independent until I get tired of their informative but upsetting articles - write something positive and constructive please! stop making it out that everything's already down the pan! stop being sensational and start encouraging change! blimey!), cinema, live music, surfing, cooking, trying to read important books, how and why people say and do things (sort of armchair studies of the human condition), climbing, BBC Radio 4, travelling here and there, thinking on car and bus journeys, writing things down to help me process them, looking for things that I've written down and subsequently lost immediately.

I'd like to meet:

David Attenborough, Bear Grylls, Ray Mears, maybe all three on a desert island where each has to do something spectaular and outdoorsy to escape, except David Attenborough who would instead tell me how the island will evolve in such detail in the future that I would weep and he could float to safety on a log in the torrent of my climatically-changed despair :)

Music:

I like it when something fits the occasion perfectly.

Movies:

Ones that highlight important issues or stories that need highlighting, such as things that we could learn from or take inspiration from, ones that are so atmospheric and completly nuts that I can't quite remember out who I was before I started watching them, or end up being late for work the next morning because I'm still so absorbed in the storyline (or lack of it).

Books:

Cloud Atlas (David Mitchell), Larry's Party (Carol Shields), His Dark Materials trilogy (Philip Pullman), Wild Swans (Jung Chang), Fast Food Nation (Eric Schlosser), Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (Robert Pirsig), The Zanzibar Chest (Aidan Hartley), Dune (Frank Herbert), The Last Secret of the Temple (Paul Sussman), The Zahir (Paulo Coelho)
